Hello, come on home with me – Lainey

I drove for hours, long out of Chicago. I drove and I drove until I had no option but to stop for gas. My tummy was also rumbling slightly. Luckily, the gas station I stopped at had one of those 24 hour diners where I could grab a bite. I parked my SUV and walked in.

I headed for the counter and there stood a stunning girl, she couldn’t have been over 17, with long black hair, fuchsia purple bangs and about three piercings on each ear. She was a good two or so inches taller than I was and was just as skinny but with her height, it was a natural thing and not self-induced like mine had been. Ugh, food. Just the thought of it was putting me off. As I sat, my mind drifted back to the girl behind the counter, she must have had a hard time from passers-through working here, especially with the amount of idiots taking chances out there. I was gazing through the so far, unappetizing menu when I heard a small voice say, “excuse me Ma’am?” I looked up automatically to find the fuchsia banged girl standing in front of me. For some reason, I smiled. “Hi, sorry I’m just trying to figure out what I want.”

She just looked at me with a look I couldn’t really decipher as yet. “I’m sorry if this offends you but aren’t you Andy Hurley’s girlfriend, Lainey?”

I winced slightly. “Yes, that is me. I’m also Fall Out Boy’s PA but I think the press was more interested in me being Andy’s girlfriend than me having an actual job.”

She laughed softly. “Yeah, that’s the part I thought you would be offended about. According to the media you’re a bit rough and outspoken and I didn’t think upsetting you at this time without the offer of caffeine or nicotine on hand would be wise.”

It was my turn to laugh. She had obviously seen the countless photos of me in the media where I always seemed to be drinking a Coke, a Pepsi or lighting a cigarette. Man, those photographers really did know how to get my bad side. “You know a lot about me it seems yet there’s no Coke yet?”

From the kitchen I heard someone yell, “Order up!” and the girl raised one finger asking me to wait. She returned quickly with a tall glass of Coke and ice and a toasted sandwich with fries. “That is the most edible thing I could recommend to you in this place and when I saw you walking in from the car park I wanted you to think I was cool so I kind of took the liberty and I’m sorry if you think I’m being forward and oh my Josh Dun, I’m rambling aren’t I?”

I laughed at her. “You are a character! But in all seriousness, who are you. Tell me about yourself.”

She looked around. The restaurant was empty except for me and she giggled, “Well, the restaurant’s kind of busy right now but I’m sure I could make time for you. I’m Raven. Rave. I live out here, kind of because after my parents died I didn’t want to go into the system. I’m basically a run-away who works because she has nothing better to do. I’m 17 and home-schooling myself.”

I was astounded; I didn’t understand how someone so amazing could stand being alone for so long. I wanted to do something for this girl. “Rave, how would you like to go into the system and be adopted? By me? I get that you’ll be 18 in a year or so but I really think you’d fit in. if you really wanted to continue working I could give you a part-time job and you’d have your choice of whether you’d carry on with home-school or go to normal high school since you’ve shown enough discipline to handle school on your own.”

Rave’s jaw dropped. “Me? Be a celebrity’s kid? With like, everything a normal kid could dream of? Let me think about it for a second. Uhm… YES!”

I laughed at her enthusiasm. It wasn’t abated at all by my laugh as she pulled off the apron she had over her now visible “Infinity on High” shirt and black ruffled skirt that reached her mid-thigh. “Hey Tommy, I quit!” she threw the apron into the back laughing hysterically. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to be able to do that for!”

As she walked out from around the counter I saw combat boots emerge and also, the man I assumed was Tommy run out from the kitchen. “Not without cashing in you don’t!”

She dutifully took out her receipts from the evening and the cash and placed them in his hand. “Sure, I’m quitting. Not robbing you.”

We walked out of the restaurant arms linked. “So, where do we get your stuff from Rave?”

She pointed to a block of apartment flats across the way from the gas station. “That’s me. I’m right across from work.”

I looked at her slightly perplexed. “What? Is there something on my face?” she quickly rubbed her face off.

I laughed, “No, no! I just wonder what has kept you going for so long out here on your own?”

She looked down. “I just didn’t want to put in some random home. I wanted to know when I fit in right with someone and I think I’m going to fit in perfect with you. When you said it would be you adopting me, does that mean you and Andy are getting married?” she questioned excitedly.

Of course this question would come up. Not just now but it would also come up during the adoption process. “No, uhm, Andy and I are kind of at odds at the moment that’s why I was all the way out here. Hey, why don’t you pack your stuff and I’ll gas up and get some things for the trip home then meet you there.”

She nodded and headed to the apartment block. I had left home with my step sister and boyfriend hanging over my head like a dark cloud but I was coming back with a little bit of a silver lining to that cloud. I was now a mom on my own terms – well sort of – an adopted mom. She would at least be my sanity in a world of confusion at the moment.
