Fight the fame

Alex

Rave was coming to the Bowl tonight. I just hoped I could keep who I was quiet until I knew I could trust her. I had told her just my name on purpose. I sympathised a lot with her on being adopted because I was adopted too.

My father was Davey Havok. Yes, AFI’s Davey Havok. He’d adopted me years back and I’d grown up with him most of my life. My real father had tried to get in touch with me last year because he thought he could get money out of dad by selling me off and we took him to court. Dumbass.

But I had been pulled out of public school due to people being fake and me hating it there. My dad got me. He let me have a lot of freedom and understood that I wanted to be a normal teenager. I didn’t need to work but he let me anyway so that I could have that working experience. He really was great. He was also the owner of the Fireside Bowl in Chicago. He said to me that he had a surprise performance tonight before the karaoke night started off. I was curious but it was probably something like free soda’s for everyone at the Bowl.

I called Rave up to see what see was wearing so we didn’t clash although, I had a strong feeling that we’d both be in black. “Hey Rave, it’s Alex!”

“Hey Alex! I was just about to call you to ask…”

I cut her off. “If you say you were calling to ask what I was going to wear it’s so a telepathic jinx and first round of drinks tonight is on you.”

She laughed shyly. “Well I guess I’m buying!”

“So what are you wearing Rave?”

She sounded like she was shuffling through her wardrobe. “I was thinking a pair of red, ripped skinnies with a white Panic! shirt and white knee length lace up Converse? How about you?”

I laughed at her. “Honey, this is Chicago. Trust me bring a jacket. I was thinking you were going to wear black but looks like I was wrong. I’m wearing black skinny jeans, a Fall Out Boy shirt with white kicks to match the knives on the Fall Out Boy shirt.”

She laughed. “Oh, you like Fall Out Boy?” Her tone was devious like she knew something I didn’t.

I answered hesitantly. “Yeah – I do. Why? Don’t you like them?”

“Oh no reason. Hey, I’m going to go get ready and see you there in a little bit.”

I ended the call and began dressing. I had already straightened out my unorthodox hairstyle (which my dad absolutely adored) and was just about to start my make-up when my dad called to me.

“Sweetie, let’s go! I have to be there a bit earlier.”

Damnit. Looks like I was doing my make-up in the car. I stomped downstairs to find my dad waiting with his car keys in hands. “You look great sweetie! Did you invite a boy tonight?”

“No dad, a girl actually.”

Dad looked shocked for a minute, then straightened his face. “Well, sweetie, I didn’t realise that you were lesbian but that doesn’t change a thing.”

I laughed. “No dad! I actually made a friend! Her name is Rave.”

A look of recognition passed over his face then he quickly tried to disguise it. He made for the door and I followed. The drive to the Bowl was silent as I applied my thick eyeliner and dark brown lipstick. Soon we arrived and I skipped to the entrance to find Rave at the dry bar drinking an orange soda. I smacked the bar. “Hey Lupe – I’ll take my usual.”

“Alex!” She screamed and threw her arms around me.

“Hey Rave! Been here long?”

She smiled slyly, “No, there’s just something Andy and his friend had to do.”

The Bowl started filling up and soon my dad took the stage and winked at me. Rave’s jaw dropped. “Oh My Josh! It’s Davey Havok and he just winked at you!”

I shrugged. “I have that effect on people. He looks like he’s got something to say. Keep quiet will you?”

Dad spoke from the stage. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Fireside Bowl’s teen night! Tonight we have a very special performance for you before the karaoke night kicks off! Please welcome to the stage Andy Hurley and Joe Trohman of Fall Out Boy!”

I couldn’t help but scream like a maniac. They were actually here! Half of Fall Out Boy was in my fathers club! This had to be the best thing to happen since they came back from Hiatus. It was even stranger that Rave was just standing next to me quiet – apart from her jaw still being dropped at dad. I still found it gross that my dad was considered a sex symbol. He continued talking.

“Now many of you may not know my 17 year old daughter but a while ago, AFI did a song for the move Mortal Instruments called 17 Crimes which I wrote for her. Tonight, myself, Andy and Joe will be performing that before we kick off the karaoke night!”

The whole Bowl went wild as dad started singing:

“If you had a day,
Would you give me a moment?
Would you allow our play
To leave no bone unbroken?

Let’s love, like 17
I’m in love with poisoning
Only bring your pretty, frightful gifts to me
Let’s love and kill like 17 now

If I weren’t so cold
We could unfreeze this moment
And as the world grows old,
We’ll leave no heart unbroken

Let’s love, like 17
I’m in love with poisoning
Only bring your pretty, frightful gifts to me
Let’s love and kill like 17 now

Tomorrow cannot be like this
And even though it’s such a simple world
Tomorrow cannot be like this
Tomorrow they will take a stand

We’ll leave no heart unbroken

Let’s love like 17
I’m in love with your new screams
Only bring those pretty, frightful gifts to me
Let’s love and kill like 17 now

Let’s run and kill like 17 now
Let’s love and kill like 17.

The whole Bowl erupted into a thunderous cheer while Rave screamed beside me: “Whoooo! Go Dad!”

This stopped me in my tracks. I looked at her confused. “Dad?”

She looked at me wide-eyed like she had just made a colossal mistake. “Uhm, I didn’t realise I had called him that and yeah… Andy Hurley is my adoptive dad. Please don’t freak out and if you just want to be my friend because he’s famous then I’m sorry but I’d rather be alone.”

I hugged her tightly. “No Rave, you don’t understand! The reason I wanted to be your friend too is because I’m adopted too! Davey Havok? That’s MY dad! We both have the same problem and now we can be each other’s friends without worrying about fakes!”

We both had made a friend that understood where the other was coming from.
