The worst possible trouble is always when your girl starts talking to her girlfriends or when you need her girlfriends more – Andy

I sat for a minute clutching Lainey’s limp body in my arms. I knew there wasn’t anything seriously wrong – at least I hoped there wasn’t – but was still scared enough to be panicking slightly. I didn’t know what to do. I pulled out my phone and thought for a second before I pressed dial.

“Andy? Is everything okay?”

“No Marie. I’m in trouble. I’m in a shit load of trouble. Lainey’s passed out – I think I shocked her. Not electrically but like, in an emotional way. I switched out her birth control two weeks back and just told her now after us arguing about her not wanting kids unless we were married and I’m not too keen on the idea of marriage and now everything is just a disaster and I don’t know what to do.”

“Fuck Andy! Why would you do something so stupid! I’ll be there in twenty minutes with a few tests. Just get some water and wipe her face down. Try get her up again.”

The phone clicked off. Not only did my girlfriend think I was the world’s biggest asshole, now our family did too. I probably deserved it. Now is not a great time to be feeling sorry for myself. I picked Lainey up and set her on the couch then followed Marie’s instructions. I began wiping her face with ice cold water, hoping it would shock her back to consciousness. A few minutes later, it took the desired effect as Lainey started coming around. “Oh thank God, I was so scared Lainey.”

She looked at me, still foggy and still apparently in shock. “Not as scared as you should be Hurley. I need to go to the pharmacy.”

I ignored her semi-threat and shushed her. “Marie is on the way over now with a few tests. She said she’d be here soon.”

Almost as if on cue, the doorbell sounded off and I ran to open it. There stood Marie, with Joe anxiously puffing away at a cigarette. The smell of burning tobacco must have been like an instant drug to Lainey. “Joe come in and light me one, I’m so fucking nervous I think I’m going to die.” She called from her couch spot.

Joe and Marie entered the room silently and Joe did as he was told while Marie stared daggers at me. “Hurley, kitchen, now.” Her tone was soft but had an ominous edge to it. I knew I was in for a world of trouble now.”

I followed her into our kitchen, away from Joe and Lainey in the lounge and out of their earshot. Marie didn’t skip a beat. “Firstly, Lainey and I have spoken about this before and she has a valid reason for not wanting this. Yet you messed with her free will. Secondly, you are not the one who’s possibly pregnant – you don’t know what this pregnancy will be like or if she’ll carry to term. What about her bipolar? Do you know how long she won’t be able to take her medication for? Do you know how much turmoil she’s going to go through along with the hormonal imbalance of a pregnancy or did you not think about the repercussions of your actions?”

I hadn’t actually thought that far ahead. Marie was right. I may possibly be putting Lainey through misery she wasn’t ready to cope with all because I was selfish and wanted what everyone else had regardless of what the consequences were. I shook my head. “You’re right Marie. I didn’t think that far ahead. But now I have to deal with whatever comes my way so let’s go find out what that is.”

We walked back out into the lounge to find Lainey and Joe nervously puffing away at another round of cigarettes and staring at three sticks. Joe spoke up, “two more minutes and we’ll know for sure.”

The longest, most tension filled two minutes of my life passed by in silence which was broken by Lainey sighing. “All negative. Crisis averted.”

Marie exhaled sharply as though she’d been holding her breathe the entire time. “Thank God. This was a lucky break Hurley but now it’s up to you two to deal with the situation. Dishonesty like this is a major blow to any relationship. Joe let’s go.”

Joe hugged Lainey tightly and came up to me and gave me a bro hug. While in the hug he whispered: “Dude, you are so fucked right now.”

Didn’t I know it.
