Figuring it all out – Andy

I woke up to an empty bed and the smell of pancakes in the air. Lainey had obviously gotten up and made some breakfast but I was a bit disappointed. I would have liked a few minutes with her before starting off on the new route we were headed – just to talk about stuff. My feelings about adopting Rave hadn’t changed; I just wanted to know that we were in this for the long haul.

I got out of bed, climbed into something more appropriate since we now had a child (appropriate for me was just a pair of shorts over my boxers) and went into the kitchen. I found Lainey, as I had expected, slaving away over the stove with a near massive pile of pancakes already done. “Gee Honey, think you made enough pancakes?”

She rolled her eyes at me. “I don’t know how much she likes to eat and she’s tall too and a growing lady. She could be ferocious and I didn’t see her have supper last night either so she must be starving. Do me a favour? Go wake Rave up.”

I snaked my arms around Lainey’s waist. “Not until you give me a kiss and tell me how much you love me before we have a teenager walking in and saying how gross it is.”

She laughed lightly and did as I had asked then swatted my arm. “Okay you got what you wanted now go wake our daughter up!”

My mind automatically jumped at the word daughter. I’d have to think about her school, worry about boys, get her nice things that kids liked and all the daddy stuff. I was so pleased about that. Now I had two girls to take care of. I wondered if Lainey would let her do her home schooling on tour with us? So many awesome possibilities and just one of them was seeing the world with my girls.

She was probably still asleep so I didn’t knock but entered softly. As I had thought, she lay in her bed peacefully dreaming away. So I tapped her lightly and spoke softly. “Good morning Princess Hurley.”

Next thing I knew, there was a piercing voice screaming for Lainey. “Hey, hey! Calm down, it’s just me! Andy!”

She calmed down instantly but by then Lainey was already running into the room. “What happened?”

I was immediately put on attention point by Lainey’s attention. “Everything’s fine! She got a fright when she saw a strange man in her room! At least I know one night stands and underage drinking are not something I need to worry about yet!”

Lainey shouted at me, “Jesus Andy! What a way to ask our daughter stuff!”

Rave was rolling on her bed in laughter at the two of us. “Oh my Josh you guys are hilarious!”

I looked at her with a weird expression on my face. “Hey I’m not the one who says “Oh My Josh.” I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s Josh from Twenty One Pilots given the shirt you’re wearing.” I pointed at her 21P shirt and she blushed profusely. “Yeah, I love them!”

I looked at Lainey. I knew our upcoming tour after we put out our new album would be with 21P since they were also recording at the moment and since Phoenix and Spencer were good friends with the guys, it automatically put us in the same circles. “Well, that is indeed very interesting to know. We’ll keep that in mind. But for now, Lainey made pancakes and we need to discuss our day so why don’t you come join us in the kitchen young lady.”

“Sure Andy, I’ll be there in a minute.”

Lainey and I left the room snickering at our shared secret. Lainey spoke up first. “I’m going to phone Phoenix and ask her to get the guys to come with the next time she comes to visit. She’s going to flip her shit.”

I gave her a co-conspirators wink. “Totally going to flip her shit.”

We waited a bit longer and soon, a more composed Rave joined us. She smiled at the pancakes and smiled even wider as Lainey got the chocolate syrup and cream out. Luckily, Lainey only kept vegan food in the house and went out to buy herself smaller portions. That was another thing we’d have to get sorted: feed my child.

Without a word, Lainey started making Rave a plate and placed it in front of the girl. She scarfed down a bite then looked puzzled. “Lainey, is this cream okay?”

I chuckled. “Sorry kid, forgot to tell you. It’s vegan cream and chocolate sauce. It just doesn’t have as much richness as what normal cream would. It’s all we have at the moment but we can go grab some stuff for you later since you don’t seem to be into vegan food.”

Rave looked smug. “Actually, I’m a vegetarian. Not a vegan but I’ve been wanting to make the change for a while it’s just that I couldn’t exactly afford vegan food on minimum wage. I’m also straight edge just by the way.”

We both looked at Lainey who was smoking an e-cigarette since she could only smoke in her office. “Don’t you two even think about getting me to give up my caffeine and nicotine. It’s more likely that I’ll sprout stems than stop drinking Coke and smoking.”

Rave laughed at Lainey. They suited one another so well. I decided it was time to get to the answers. “So, Rave, is it okay if I ask a few questions?”

Rave nodded and I continued. “First off, what exactly happened to your parents?”

She swallowed her food and thought carefully, probably looking for a way to word it. “I never knew where my mom was. It was always just dad and I. Then one day he went to work and on his way home while I was waiting and doing my homework, he was in a car crash. A truck pushed him off the road and the car went up in flames. We identified him by his dental records.”

I saw Lainey tearing up slightly. She must really feel for this girl. I got the feeling of déjà vu over the gruesome tale – like someone had told me this terrifying story before. I continued on with my next question. “I am so sorry Rave. That sounds terrible. I am glad we have the chance to have someone as strong as beautiful as you join us and make a family. So I know you aren’t a trouble maker and I’m going to guess you’d like to continue home school. Do you mind being adopted as a Hurley or would you prefer to keep your own surname?”

She shook her head. “Nope. I would love to be Raven Hurley. New person deserves a new name!”

I laughed at her enthusiasm and braced her in a side hug. So far, I couldn’t have designed a better daughter myself. I looked to Lainey before asking my next question, knowing this could be a major game changer. ”I am just as excited about this as you are but there is one question I need to ask before we go to the FCA and put in an adoption request so we can do this privately. Are you sure you have no living relatives?”

She shrugged her shoulders. “My dad told me a few times about a half-brother who was ten years younger than him named Pete but all he had were a few pictures of them still as toddlers. I think he’s some sort of hotshot in LA now but I doubt that he’d be interested in me.”

I was suddenly hit by a flashback. Now I knew why Rave’s story sounded so familiar.
