Tehani's face lit up the moment we got to the campus. We had just under two months before school started but students were here for summer sessions. Our band director, Kenneth Richardson, did believe in taking a full summer off. He spent the first two weeks with his family on vacation and then was back, writing new songs and planning a new field show.
As we pulled into the parking lot of the band hall, Mr. Rich, as he preferred to be called, was out with his staff, going over the parking lot and getting it ready for the next season. I pulled over to the student parking away from the practice area so I didn't disturb whatever he was planning.
"I watched videos about bands and college life three years ago when I applied for my first college course," Tehani said. She'd forgotten she was supposed to be injured and had her head plastered against the window.
"Which colleges did you watch?" Jaxon asked.
"HBCUs mostly. There's a lot more energy than others for things other than sports."
I laughed. Tehani sounded almost irritated with that. "Well, we do like to put style on everything we do. Sports are a big part of any university."
Tehani turned from the window. "It's more. Like fraternity boys and the soros, it was called Greek life. Every female was a drama episode in the making but they looked good doing it. I first thought it was like the Atlanta Housewives reality shows."
"It is," me and the twins said at the same time.
Tehani got this adorable confused look on her face. It always happened when we told her something that didn't fit into the mold she thought she was sure about. "It is all fake?"
"Not really," I explained trying to find the right words. "It is exaggerated for the cameras. Let's take this university. Our human females here are every bit the term diva and drama. They would be like those women on the videos. Their hair is normally always done, nails done and they are all about the guys or their education with some fun on the side."
Tehani sighed. "I probably should have studied anthropology, or psychology. Maybe both. The more I learn, the more confused I become."
"Give yourself a break, Tee." Jarxon opened his door. "Your experience has been through videos instead of a life lived. Let's go see the campus."
"Wait. I don't want to walk around with this extra stuff. Can I get away with a hip brace?"
I looked at the guys. "I don't know. Medicine is not my strong suit."
"I was cleared to start exercising," Tehani argued. "It's been a whole month now since the incident."
"I say let her wear the brace but the arm cast has to stay," Parxson said.
Tehani smiled her excitement evident. She looked to me for the final say and my heart filled. Tehani had me whipped. I couldn't deny her anything. "Ok, we can get rid of the huge leg brace for a smaller hip brace. But, no running. Try to be a little dinged up."
