I get a few different subjects of homework, which I am grateful for.

I hate it when my teachers will give the other students homework but won’t give any to me. Just because I can’t see, it’s very offensive, they only give me homework when I tell them that I want to be treated like any other student.

School is now over, and I am waiting by the entrance for Xavier.

“You ready?” I hear a girl say to someone.

“Sure, let’s get out of this hell hole.” Another says.

“Agreed” A third one says.

“So where are we going to go, the mall, the coffee- “

“You ready to go, Rose.” Xavier says cutting off the sound of whoever is talking.

I nod my head, I grab his elbow, at first it feels like he is going to take his elbow out of my grip.

“It’s easier for me to follow you this way.” I explain.

“Oh, okay, you just surprised me that’s all.”

I feel my cheeks grow warm, “Sorry.” I mumble.

“Its fine, I’m glad to help.”

“Who’s that?” Someone asks.

“Who?” A different girl asks.

“That girl with Xavier, and what’s that thing she has in her hand, I hope she doesn’t think it’s a fashion statement.”

“It’s called me being blind.” I call out to the girl.

“You heard us?” The second girl asks.

“Well,” I look in her direction, “when you don’t have one sense, another heightens, mine is just hearing that heightened.”

“Creepy.” The girl says.

“What’s creepy?” I ask.

“You looked right at me, are you sure you’re not blind?”

“I just have a good sense of where people are.” I snap and then I continue to follow Xavier.

“You okay?” Xavier asks.

I nod my head, lower it, and follow him the rest of the way to the car. Again, I count the minutes. When the car stops I turn to the driver seat.

“Are we there already?” I ask.

“Yeah.”

He turns the engine off and then my door is pulled open, I take my seatbelt off and get out, I leave my cane in my backpack, so I instantly grab Xavier’s arm. When we get into the eye clinic we go straight to the check in desk.

“Do you have an appointment?” The receptionist asks.

“Yeah, my name’s Rosalina Sanchez.”

“Oh, okay. Are you here with her?” There is a pause. “Okay take her down this hall last door to the right.”

There is another pause before I feel my arm being pulled so I follow. I sit down on the bed that is in the room, that we go into.

“Hello, Rosalina, my name’s Doctor Mines, and I’ll be doing your surgery, how you are feeling about this?” The doctor says after a while of waiting.

“Excited, I can’t wait to be able to finally see.”

“Okay.” I feel him grab me by the elbow and I get down off the crinkly wax paper that’s on the bed.

We go into another room and he lays me down on a bed.

“Okay, you do know that this might not work, right?” The doctor asks.

“Yeah I know, but that is why I have hope and faith that this is going to work.”

“I like your spirit. Now you might get a weird sensation on your eyes and that would be the laser. After the surgery is done then you’ll have to wait a whole week before you can take the bandages off, next Monday after school you can take them off and you’ll have to get the prescribed drops and use those for about a couple of months. Take the drops both in the morning when you wake up and at night as you are getting ready for bed. Now are you ready?”

I nod my head, and hear the doctor moving around getting things ready.

And like he says when he starts the surgery I feel the weird sensation on my eyes. It takes about twenty minutes on each eye, before the doctor bandages them up. When we get back in the room where I was before the doctor took me into a different room.

“Here’s the prescribed drops for you and don’t get them until next week when you know if you can see.”

“Okay.” I say as I nod my head. Then I feel Xavier’s hand on the small of my back and steers me out of the eye clinic.

When we get back into his car I feel around in my bag for my sunglasses that I will use when I need to.

“You want to come over to my place?” Xavier asks.

“Sure.” I say with a smile.
