☂ maybe they're here for Kenny's birthday ☂
I draw the line while bowling with children when the thirteen-year-old boys start staring at me like I'm some foreign creature from another planet. I can see Five watching me from across the alley, but whenever I look up at him, he quickly looks away.
Well, two can play that game.
"Nice job," I smile at one of the kids, who finally knocks down a single pin. "Better luck next time."
The kid rolls his eyes, handing me the ball. "Let's see you do better, woman."
I sigh inwardly. This is not how I envisioned my last day on Earth going, but whatever. What did I picture it as? That's highly classified.
I toss the bowling ball, twirling my fingers behind my back. It barrels down the lane, knocking every pin down in one perfect shot.
"Lucky shot," someone mutters.
"Is it?" I raise an eyebrow, catching the ball effortlessly as it comes back. "Hand me another one."
This time, I toss it backward, flawlessly striking the pins again. They fall with a satisfying clatter, disappearing behind the backboard. I manage this three more times before Five strides across the alley toward me, irritation radiating off him.
"Alright, Y/N, show's over," he says, placing a hand firmly on my arm. "Let's go, okay?"
"Is he your boyfriend?" One of the little girls asks, her voice full of curiosity. "He's kinda short."
I glance up at Five, who's a good two inches taller than me. "Yes, he's my boyfriend," I smirk, nudging him with my elbow. "Come on, babe. Five more minutes."
"No," Five doesn't budge. "The world is ending, and you're bowling with children."
The girl sticks her tongue out at him. "You're a child, too. I don't like him."
"Neither do I," I mutter, rolling my eyes. "Fine."
We leave the confused children behind, heading back toward the bench.
"Where's Luther and Alison?" I ask, scanning the alley.
"They went out to the phone booth," Five answers quickly. "We need to talk."
"They're still out there?" I inhale sharply. "Wow. Must be a big phone booth."
"Y/N," Five says, his tone serious.
"What?"
He hesitates, his gaze darkening as he looks at me. "I'm going to say this quickly, okay?" He shifts uncomfortably. "I care about you a lot. And I'm going to do everything I can to stop the world from ending. But if I can't, I just... thought you should know. You're everything to me. I'd hate to lose you... again."
My breath catches in my throat. "I care about you, too. And we're going to stop the apocalypse. You don't have to do it all by yourself, okay?"
Five nods, his expression shifting back to his usual "I don't care" demeanor.
"Now, where are the rest of those idiots—" He glances around and spots Diego and Klaus, sharing a bowl of chips at the counter. "Hey, losers! We're going now!"
Diego looks up, mouth full of chips. "Right now?" He frowns. "But we're not—"
A loud gunshot rings through the air, cutting him off.
People scream in panic, running toward the emergency exits. Several men in combat gear rush in, weapons aimed at us. I fling them aside with a burst of energy, but more keep coming. Bullets tear through the air from every direction, and I can't stop them all.
"Shit," Five swears under his breath. "They found us again."
"Maybe they're here for Kenny's birthday?" Klaus suggests, ducking behind the counter. We crouch low, trying to shield ourselves from the barrage.
"I doubt it," I hiss, narrowing my eyes as I scan the chaos.
