After I munched on Keigo's favourite treat and we chatted for a while, the moon shone brightly in the night sky. I sucked in a breath and checked my phone. Just about midnight. Keigo peered over the counter and looked at my phone to find no notifications and quirked his eyebrow. Then his eyes widened and he snapped his fingers like he cracked the code.
"Oh! Did your phone do that weird buzz thing but show nothing on the screen? That happens literally ALL THE TIME." He shook his head in disappointment and I laughed, which caused him to smile more. My heart thundered in my chest. He was just too cute.
He thought the same.
"While that does happen, this time I was checking the time," I amended and showed him my phone, and he blinked his eyes out of shock.
"Wow. It really got that late huh. Time to hit the hay! You stayin' here?" I shook my head and put my phone back in my pocket. He frowned at that, discontentment lining his face.
"Sorry, I figured I'd fly home. It's a really pretty night, so I might hang outside for a bit." I stared longingly out the window, the intricate sparkle of the stars attracting my attention. I longed to soar among them, to glide my fingers along them, although I would more than likely burn to a crisp. To me, it was worth it. He sighed and drooped his wings.
He shrugged off the disappointment and returned with a beaming, wholesome smile. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach and I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. Oh, what this boy did to me. "It's all good. Before you take off though, wanna swap numbers?" A grin crawled across my face at the request, and I slowly brought out my phone while nodding.
"Yeah, yeah that sounds good. Then we can team up for more missions," I said, happy with the outcome. And he chuckled before stepping up towards me, phone in hand. However, instead of handing me his phone, he stepped right up to me, his wings curling around my backside and pushing me towards him slightly. I flushed tomato red as his hand reached my face and gently ran a hand through my hair. His eyes didn't leave mine the whole time, and I was stuck between pushing him away or staying frozen.
I was immobile, still deciding. "Or we could, you know, actually go out," he offered, gifting me a confident side smile before stepping away. I felt as though he was a magnet that was pulling me towards him with his own field, and I nearly fell over when he left. The pull he emitted was just unfair. He stole my phone and began to plug his number into my phone, before taking his phone and putting in my number for me, as I was still frozen in place. When he slipped my phone back in my hand, I stammered and took a step back, pulling out my wings. "Have a good night, Josephine," he farewelled, a knowing glint in his amber eyes. I nodded as I scrambled backward, keeping my eyes on him.
"Y-You too," I stuttered embarrassingly, and without a moment's delay launched myself into the air, my cheeks burning.
However, those events melted away into the corners of my mind when I looked into the sky. The moon seemed to call out to me, it's light drawing me closer. My mother's side pulled me closer to the sky, so high that I felt I could hold the strand of light in my palms. I flew around in the sky for a while, enjoying the cool breeze of the starlit night, and allowed my worries to be carried away in the breeze.
Dabi looked into the sky and watched as she flew in the sky without a care in the world, her elegant wings fluidly spinning her in the air effortlessly. His throat was blocked as he caught a glimpse of her face; completely serene, at ease, despite the events that had happened earlier. It shook him.
Was it really possible to get up and move forward like that?
He stood there watching her dance with the stars in the sky, her flaming silhouette illuminated by the glowing moon.
A week later, a message popped up on my phone. I didn't really need to guess; it was Keigo.
We had been texting back and forth the whole time, mostly just him being a shameless flirt and teasing me constantly while telling me how awesome he was and how many villains he put behind bars. Most of the time he exaggerated his encounters for better effect, so I often found myself rolling my eyes. The phone buzzed again and I saw two messages with his name flash on my screen, and I smiled instinctively. I picked up the phone and looked at my most recent messages.
9:56 AM
Cluckers<3: Hey, do you wanna hang out? Maybe go to a bar tonight or something, I got the night off miraculously
9:57 AM
Cluckers<3: Also, Dabi's been complaining like crazy about how you basically up and died when we were supposed to see him last time, so he's tagging along.
I found myself chuckling at the sudden change in tone. First, he was asking if I wanted to go, and now suddenly it was set in stone and Dabi was coming along. Not that I minded, I usually left the nights to my sidekicks, which were more than capable of calling my cell in case I needed to make an appearance. After a little bit of thought, I replied.
