"Hello Josephine, the couple are ready to ask a few questions."
I beamed up at the matron and skipped into the room, my happiness unraveling itself. I was finally being considered for adoption! How I longed to have a family to call my own, especially after being alone for so long. Two years without parents left me lonely and wanting, but it was about to come to an end.
The lady had chocolate brown hair wrapped up tightly in a bun, and the man beside her wore a large-brimmed hat that covered his eyes. I sat in the chair, squirming with the amount of energy that I had bottled up in preparation for this meeting slowly spilling out at the seams. The couple smiled at me warmly, and fuzzy warmth bloomed in my stomach. They seemed so kind and lovely!
"You're Josephine, right?" The woman asked, and I nodded enthusiastically. She giggled at my response. "Aw, aren't you just adorable. Isn't she, Harold?" Her tone had the slightest edged intonation, which caused him to swallow and nod his head in agreement. I didn't notice anything, blissfully ignorant of the interaction between the woman and her husband. As long as they gave me a home and people to call family, it didn't matter if they were a little weird. I was too!
"Yup, Name's Josephine Seraya, and I'm six years old - oh look, my front tooth fell out earlier, wanna see?" I asked, and the lady's hand flew up to cover her mouth as she laughed softly. She shook her head no, and my hand dropped from my lip. Why wouldn't she wanna see? Was that not interesting?
"Sweetie, what's your Quirk? We've heard lots about it, but we would like to know about it from you," she asked kindly, and my heart dropped. Sure, my quirk was cool and all, but why didn't she wanna know about me? The matron behind me coughed, and I stiffened slightly, before relaxing. Maybe they just wanted to know so they could take care of me better. I smiled at them, and the lady tilted her head as if to permit me to speak.
"I call my Quirk Phoenix, because of my wings!" I began, and pulled out my wings, which were just getting big enough for me to fly with, but I hadn't yet tried too. The matron told me I wasn't allowed in case I get hurt. I understood, but it sucked. "Also, flames from my heart go through my arms and legs, and then I can manipulate fire. Wanna see?" I chirped, and the lady and her husband nodded, their attention now heavily invested in me. It felt nice, to have people care.
I sucked in a breath and felt the rhythm of my heart before I coaxed it to produce flames that raced through my veins. The tips of both of my hands began to glow and I pushed out the flames from my hands, expelling the fire that welled in my palms. The lady oohed and clapped her hands as my flames dispersed, and I sighed as I sat down. It didn't take long for my arms and hands to cool down, seeing as how I didn't use that much, but sometimes they stung from the heat.
"Wow, that's incredible Josephine. Your Quirk is extraordinary." I blushed at her compliments, fiddling in my chair. Suddenly, they got up from their chairs and nodded to the matron, before gently patting my head. "It's unfortunate but we must be on our way. You'll see us again soon, dear," the lady reassured, before shaking the matron's hand and walking out the door. I stood up and headed towards the matron, who crouched down and placed her hands on my shoulders, looking directly in my eyes.
"How were they sweetheart? Kind people, huh?" I frowned slightly and looked at the ground, fidgeting.
"I don't know, they-" I stopped speaking as her eyes flashed green, and a serpentine smile crawled over her features. Images of lots of laughs and cuddles and stories fluttered through my mind, and my chest felt warm with the interaction. My eyes lowered slightly, heavy lidded, even though I felt so excited to see them again!
"Let's try again. How were they?" She repeated, her smile relaxing back into her ordinary facade. A small smile stretched on my lips, and my voice was quiet and monotone as I replied.
"They were amazing, Mother. I can't wait to see them again."
"Good dear, let's go back out into the playroom," she suggested, her eyes flashing green again, and I blinked and smiled at her, any previous doubt of her character completely gone. All I could remember was her patting my head softly, congratulating me on my new family with a sad smile on her face. Like she would miss me. I nodded in agreement and ran out the door, bursting at the seams with joy. I couldn't wait to tell everyone about the interview!
