To say L was shocked would be simply wrong, straight up inaccurate, even. Such reaction from a newborn is rare, but it wasn't quite a sight, either, that it would provoke an immediate move constructed. If L were being honest, he was expecting the outburst, especially from someone who was in clear distress prior transformation.
He was being somewhat provocative, however, and that is annoying.
The Hell Spawn was quiet and docile, at least at first. Confused and in a state of shock, probably, but overall obedient and harmless. It was advisable to approach them now as they are at their least volatile when confused. Confusion makes them easy to be handled, so L did just that.
But all hell break loose when said Devil developed a pair of ugly claws and start to rampage.
Although it was dark, L was able to detect his eyes. It held a malicious intent to kill. A glint which only meant that he was out for blood, seeking violence and only violence.
It was the same as other Devils
L is aware that this is probably his Fight or Flight instinct kicking in, as he perceives L as a potential threat to his safety. It provoked him, comditioning him into combat as L could gather from his reaction. However, the only reason he even engaged in a fight was because he had won his previous battle— thus, he felt compelled to prove his worth and, most probably, win back Sayu Yagami who is now cowering in shock.
Poor girl is going to have an indispitable amount of trauma.
However, L knew that the Hell Spawn, Light Yagami, didn't mean any harm. He saw L as a threat, therefore wanting to win against his opponent. He wanted to stand victorious still with the intention of protecting himself (and to some extent, his little sister as well). L had seen reactions such as this one before, a protector, in more ways than one. He bare his teeth and shows his claws, but he has no intention in actually using them to shred someone to pieces.
That, or L is simply having wishful thinking, again.
An evidence to support his hypothesis was L is the only person he's attacking right now, so he is 100% sure it's the former case.
That didn't change the fact that the hell spawn is actively charging at him still, however.
Dodge dodge, "Light Yagami", dodge, duck, "Please calm yourself. I meant you no harm".
'Of course, that was until I have to resort to violence to subdue you'.
"I simply wish to talk. No need to be hostile".
Dodge, dodge, duck. Turn around.
"I promise that both you and your sister is going to be safe", dodge, "Please don't fret".
Light simply roared, not taking his words into account. L knew that there's a possibility that the boy couldn't even process his words, that everything that's being said as of now is all nothing but incoherent speeches or sounds to him.
Nothing but annoying noises.
Devils are known to be illiterate, unable to grasp even the basics of knowledge unless they made the conscious decision to enhance them themselves. So, when a newborn is presented in a new territory and is already in a state of shock, their brain went into comatose and lets their natural instinct kicking in.
It was cruel, yes, but it was one way to protect itself from further damage.
By giving in to their animal instinct.
But L needed Light to understand that he's not here to hurt, needed him to comprehend the fact that L is here to contain him from the public as he remained a threat, to himself and others, but not to kill him.
