Week 5: Changes in the body are still subtle but the embryo is now the size of a sesame seed, 2-3 millimetres. Many structures are starting to take shape.

I arrived at the hospital about ten minutes later, my heart thudding in my chest as I practically ran to the reception desk.
“Hi. I’m looking for Dr. Lawry,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady despite the anxiety twisting inside me.
“Do you have an appointment?” the receptionist asked, her tone polite but firm.
“Actually, I do—but it’s tomorrow afternoon. I just… I can’t wait until tomorrow. Please, I just need a few minutes—I won’t waste his time,” I said, my voice pleading.
She hesitated, clearly unsure how to respond.
“I’m sorry, it’s just that he’s a busy doctor, and he works on a strict schedule—regardless of who’s looking for him.” I exhaled, frustration bubbling in my chest.
The elevator doors opened, and there he was—Zach.
Relief crashed over me like a wave. Of course, of all moments, he had to appear now. His eyes widened in shock at seeing me, and without thinking, I ran to him.
“Hey,” I breathed out.
“Babe, what are you doing here?” he whispered, pulling me back toward the elevator as if shielding me from the world.
“Thank goodness you’re here. We have a problem,” I blurted, panic bubbling in my chest.
“Are you sick? Is the baby okay?” He searched my face, concern etched in every line. I nodded quickly.
“We’re fine, but—”
The elevator doors opened again, and a nurse stepped in, giving us a polite smile.
“Hi,” she greeted, and we both returned it. Zach pressed the button for the seventh floor and waited until we reached it. He took my hand in his, grounding me, and led me to his office.
The last time I’d been here, Dr. Lawry hadn’t been working.
Once inside, he closed the door behind us.
“Okay, tell me. What’s going on?” he asked. I drew in a deep breath.
“Remember a few days ago when I came for a check-up and you weren’t here?” I asked.
“Yeah, I remember that,” he said, gulping.
“Well… I found Dr. Lawry, and he ran some tests. He said I should come back tomorrow. Zach—he might know I’m pregnant.” His eyes widened.
“Oh, shit!” he cursed softly.
“I came to see him and maybe ask him to be discreet, but the lady at reception said I needed an appointment,” I explained.
“It’s hospital policy,” he said, pacing. “Right now he’s in surgery. He’s been back-to-back all day. You’d have to wait, even with an appointment.”
A spark of an idea lit in my chest.
“Perfect,” I whispered urgently. Zach glanced at me, eyebrows raised.
“We should go into his office and see if we can find my file,” I said.
“Kyla… we could get caught.”
I cupped his face in my hands, forcing him to look at me. “There’s a fifty percent chance we won’t. I’ll be on the lookout. I cannot risk him finding out if he doesn’t know yet. Please?”
