Chapter 15 - I failed

(Steve POV)

A loud crash breaks through my pained head. I slowly try to get up but feel something above me. I notice I was under the bed. I crawl out of it feeling broken glass on the floor, cutting my palms and bare feet.

"EMERGENCY, CAPTAIN ROGERS ROOM, WINDOW BREAK IN" FRIDAY announces through the building over and over again. It hurts my ears and my head but I have to get up. I have to get to Aspen. I stand up and notice the bulletproof windows were broken outwards. I look out and see nothing in the dark. I take a step and hear a plastic crunch different from the glass. I kneel down and see Aspen's black framed glasses. 

It hits me all at once. They came for her. I run to my shield grabbing it and jumping out the window, tucking and rolling as I land. I run following the shards of glass on the grass until it ends, blood had pulled there. I search desperately around me. No, no I can't lose her. I told her I would protect her. I run around to the edge of the property looking for her and I still see nothing. It's like she vanished from that bloody spot.

Vision flies over and lands next to me while I frantically look around. "Rogers, are you alright?"

"They took her... Scan the entire property, they couldn't have gone far." I command him. I start running the edge of the property to see if I can catch any signs of anything.

"Rogers, there seems to be some drops of blood by the road. Recent tire tracks are also there. I also found this." Shit, they drove off already. He hands me her tracking bracelet...Dammit....

"Call Stark and tell him what's happened" I start running back to the compound as I yell "Have him on every traffic camera starting from here!" Vision nods flying off. 

I see the pool of blood again. My heart sinks, I feel sick to my stomach. I shake it off running into the building spotting Bucky looking out my window. Walking in, the whole compound is awake and on high alert. I grab an agent and tell them to get all the Avengers into the conference room ASAP. I head there immediately, pulling Aspen's glasses out of the pocket of my sweats.

"We'll find you baby, just hold on" I whisper to it hoping somehow she can hear me.

Bucky and Natasha were the first ones in.

"What happened Steve? Your window is trashed."

"They came, they got her. Vision found tire tracks outside the compound by her blood and her tracker." Bucky's jaw clenches and I can see the fear and anger in his eyes. Natasha stares at Aspen's glasses, her eyes watery and dark.

"What the fuck is going on?" Sam runs in looking at us. I can't keep repeating myself, I just can't. The words burned in my throat like acid. I took everything in me to not throw up.

"Shut up and sit Sam it's going to be a long night." Natasha says to him sternly. Bucky moves to my side placing a hand on my shoulder after I sit with my head hung. Standing up became too much. I felt like the world was ripped from under my feet. My body was shaking at the thought of her being hurt in anyway. She's strong...stronger than you...she'll be okay. I hold her glasses tightly against my palm remembering the moments she would get flustered, when she did she would adjust her glasses, blushing, looking away. I would always want to get close to her cupping her face and forcing her to look at me. I wanted to see those beautiful brown eyes as she blushed for me. There's so much I wanted to say and do that I never got to. Don't Steve...don't think like that you'll have a chance, you'll find her.

Tony was the last one to come in. He had taken a jet here the second he got the warning from FRIDAY.

"So...whose going to talk?" He says looking around. "Where's Aspen?" I can't talk, I can't tell him that his daughter is gone because I couldn't protect her. "Rogers?" I can feel his anger from my seat. I flinch at my name. One day I was going to ask him for her hand...now I know he will never grant it even if we find her safe.
