chapter 5 (kat)

I didn't know where I was going. Honestly I didn't know where to go. I felt like everything was coming down. I felt like I couldn't breathe. I stopped walking. I just stood there in the middle of court. Some stopped and stared while others just kept going.

Alexei grabbed my hands standing there while I started hyperventilating.

"Breathe Kat. Breathe." He said.

"Kat." I heard Steve's voice.

Alexei stumbled back, letting Steve take a hold of me. "I leave you two to talk." Alexei walked away.

I calmed myself down after a few moments and I just sat there, staring at Steve. He didn't even look at me, he looked down fidgeting with his hands.

"How long?" I asked.

"I found out last night."

"You said it was never like that with her."

"It's not." He looked up at me, "It happened once. It was a mistake, we both said it was. She was with Ryder, and it was in the moment, and it wasn't supposed to happen. She never told me anything after, and she ended up getting pregnant, she said she knew for a fact it wasn't mine."

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why now?"

He didn't say anything, he looked back down at his hands.

"Steve." He looked back up at me, I took a deep breath, "I-" my voice started to break, "I don't think I can do this."

"Kat, no."

I let out a slight chuckle, "It's not like you can leave your baby." Steve looked up at me, "I'm not going to ask you to leave your baby." I looked away, "Steve, I remembered everything about my time with the strigoi, I missed my birthday, I don't even know how long I've spent as a strigoi, and the people." I took a deep breath, "I fed off innocent humans, I killed them."

"Two months." He steps over so I can see him, "I've spent two months waiting for you. Katerina Belikov, I knew from the first moment I met you, you were going to change my life. These last couple of months, I've chased you around the world, I fell in love with you. I've been through hell, I lost you once and I don't want to do it again. I'm not going to throw it all away. I messed up with the whole Veronica thing, I should have told you, how I truly felt. I lost you to Asher, then to Nate. Kat I don't want to play these games anymore, I know what I want and I want you. I know we both have a lot going on, but we can get through this together. I love you Katerina, and I'm not going to stop fighting for you."

I looked directly into his eyes, my voice shaking, I said, "Love fades Steve, and mine has."

He looked at me in disbelief, he tried grabbing my hands but I moved away, he wanted to say something, but he couldn't. He just looked at me.

I wanted to leave but I just looked at him. I lied to him. I couldn't take it back. It was the best for him, for the baby.

"Katerina." He reached out again, this time grabbing my hand. I couldn't move, I just froze. His eyes were watering, I've never seen him like this, He pulled me in, he cupped my face, "My darling, my person. Please don't do this. Kat, please, we can make this work, please don't leave me again."

I looked into his tearful eyes. I wanted to take it back. I looked down at his lips, then back up at his eyes. In his eyes, I saw her. I stumbled back, and turned around.

No, I thought. She's supposed to be gone now. I'm a dhampir again. This can't be happening. Veronica Devin can't seem to take a hint.

"Leave me alone." I grabbed my head.
