chapter 6 (steve)

I haven't seen her in a few days. The last time I saw her was at the dinner party. She hasn't been at the trial, or at her favorite restaurants. From what I know, her friends haven't seen her either. Even Nate has been wondering where she was.

    I woke up dreading the day. Today was the day, my testimony. I was being called to the stand to testify against Lily.
   
These last couple of days, I've spent every morning in the same cafe, today was no different. The cafe served lots of different types of cuisine, and probably served the worst food in court. But if you wanted to catch a late night snack, you would be forced to come here, as this is the only place open 24/7. And, depending who you ask, they have the best milkshakes and cheeseburgers.

    This cafe happened to be the one where I first kissed Kat.

    I sat in the booth closest to the door. I was probably there for an hour, reading a book to pass the time. The door opened. Maddie walked in with Mark.

    Maddie made a gesture, "See, exactly where I told you. He spends hours here every morning."

    Maddie left, as Mark sat down, "Good coffee?"

    "Depending on how much creamer you use."

    He chuckled. "Are you nervous about today?"

    "I mean I guess."

    "Steve, she's okay. She just needs time."

    "She's all I think about. I've been worried about her."

    "She thinks about you too. Trust me, Alexei and I spend so much time with her, all she asks about is you. And the baby." He leans closer, "Steve I hate to be the one to ask, but as someone who has grown up with the Contas, I know how they are. Are you sure the baby even is yours?"

    I gave him a skeptical look, "What do you mean?"

    "I talked to Adelaide after my party, she didn't know about the baby. Contessina tells her sister everything, but she didn't tell her about this. Me and others are just saying, maybe it's time to consider a paternity test."

    I've never thought of it. Asking for one is a smart idea.
   
    "Look," Mark continued, "You have nothing to lose. I'm just saying you're risking everything for a baby that might not even be yours. What if you wake up in a couple years and realize he looks more like Ryder. It's better to be safe than sorry."

    The waitress came before I could say anything, "Would you like anything hun?" She asked Mark as she set down a piece of pie and poured more coffee into my cup.

    "Can I get a cheeseburger and an Oreo shake to go?"

    The waitress nodded and walked away.

    "You're going to go see her." I waited for him to say something, but she didn't, "I have to go with you."

    "Steve, there's a lot going on. She only really allows Kenna, Declan, Asher, Alexei, and Kai in there. Hell, she only lets Declan in there. She'll come and find you when she's ready, I told you just give her time."

    "Is she talking?"
   
    "Barley." he slumped back, "You should ask Dec for the details, he knows more than I do."

    The waitress comes back, leaving the food on the table. Mark starts to get up and head towards the door."

    "Peter and Gamora," I managed to slip out before he got too far, he turned around, "Please remind her about them."

    He smirks, "She knew you'd say that. She also said to shave, you have to look good when you take the stand."
