FOR TWO SISTERS WHO HAD ONCE believed that nothing would come between them, a mere teenage boy had. Darcie couldn't believe it as Rochelle continued to avoid the house, spending as much time as she could with Sam.
In the end, Darcie had avoided being home herself too, especially since the house felt ridiculously lonely with her father always at work. Her time was spent either with her boyfriend or with her friends, searching for a constant distraction. Darcie still couldn't work as her hands were still sore, but she was slowly starting to use them again.
Tiffany hadn't missed a picture opportunity, though. Upon returning from the hospital, Embry had his hand wrapped in a cast with a bone in his hand broken. With them both bandaged, Tiffany had snapped a picture of the two, claiming that if there's a third trip, she'll be locking them up permanently in the house.
However, now, Darcie is spending her time at Embry's house. They were watching a film downstairs, disappointed with the weather outside. It's raining, a sign that summer is truly coming to an end, and that school would be starting again soon.
"Have the four of you been sat here all day?" Tiffany questions, returning home from work.
"It's raining outside," says Embry. "What else are we supposed to do?"
"Embry can't get his cast wet," adds Darcie, then she brightens with a smile. "I could always come back to work, you know."
"Good point," Tiffany's eyes fall on Darcie. "And you're not due back till next week, Darcie. However, I might have something a little more interesting than whatever it is you're watching."
"I don't know," says Quil. "Nothing can beat Shrek."
"I might have answers to Rochelle," Tiffany announces, capturing their attention as four heads turn to face Tiffany, but the mother's brown eyes are still focused on Darcie. "That's if you want to know, Darcie?"
Darcie nods her head, a little too eagerly. "Please."
The four follow Tiffany, heading to their small dining room area as they sit down, exchanging questioning looks amongst themselves. Tiffany disappears from the room temporarily to return with an old-bound book.
"Makah legends, Mom?" Embry groans. "Really?"
"Yes, really," says Tiffany, sitting opposite the four. "Makah and Quileute are linked together in many ways, Embry. When Darcie told me about the iron burning her, it reminded me of the legends."
"Here we go," Jacob mumbles.
"I heard that, Jacob," Tiffany's eyes narrow at the teenage boy. "Look, here me out, okay? I'm not saying the legends are real, but to Sam and Rochelle — most likely the elders too — they're all real."
"Tell us," says Darcie.
Tiffany nods, opening the book as she turns the book around for the four to see. It's a painting of a delicate looking woman with pointy ears and bright forest green eyes. She's beautiful with dark, glowing skin and an eternal-like beauty that leaves them all a little stary-eyed.
