TWO DAYS LATER, ROCHELLE WAS DISCHARGED.
For a week, Lewis had taken time off work with Darcie insisting to do the same, but her father had reminded her that she had already had a lot of time off. So Darcie spent her time working, volunteering and spending every free second fussing over her sister.
The only time Darcie got to see her friends was for Embry's birthday, where the four had headed to the movies, and then a fast-food restaurant after. Knowing Embry was excited to start driving, Darcie had put together a gift basket for him of everything he'd need for his first car.
For Rochelle, the scars would be permanent, but the doctor had a treatment plan to reduce the damage. Currently, Rochelle had to remain bandaged while resting to let her body heal. Then, once the bandages were removed, Carlisle Cullen could then determine the nerve damage.
Rochelle had listened to the doctor's words: she had rested, but not in the way that Darcie had liked. During the week, Rochelle had barely left her bed — barely spoken. Rochelle had become a shell, almost like she was in shock with what had happened, as well as likely being heartbroken as Sam had not come to see her.
Already, they had delayed Rochelle's moving in day for college, wanting to give her enough time to heal. As much as Darcie wanted Rochelle home to try fixing things, she knew that college would be what Rochelle needed — though, whether Rochelle went, Darcie wasn't sure.
"Rochelle, please say something," Darcie pleads after a week, sitting close to her sister's bed. "You can't go on like this."
Rochelle simply stares at her untouched breakfast.
"I can run you a bath," suggests Darcie. "Maybe we can walk Bruno?"
Again, Darcie's met with silence.
"I'm breaking up with Callum," Darcie announces, desperate for something — anything.
At that, Rochelle's head turns on her pillow, staring at her sister. "Why?"
"I... want to be honest with him," says Darcie, trying not to cry at the one word that Rochelle's spoken. "Callum's always known, but I still like Embry, and not even Callum can make those feelings go away. Callum deserves someone better than me. But I selfishly don't want to lose him either. I think I love him, but it's more like how I love Jacob and Quil."
"You've always been honest," says Rochelle sadly as if the trait came as a burden now. "I've made so many mistakes, Darcie, and here you are doing the right thing like usual. Callum knows the truth, so it'll hurt, but in time, he'll come back to you."
Darcie can feel the sting of tears, but she doesn't let them fall. Of course, she's upset about Callum, but it's more to do with the fact that Rochelle's talking to Darcie. For a second, it's like the start of summer again with two sister's believing nothing can come between them.
