The Kids Are Alright (2)

Kylie's POV

Anxiety filled the Impala like a thick smog, my breathing labored, my heart pounding so loud that I was surprised no one could hear it. Sam's smoky blue eyes were constantly in the rear-view mirror, silently checking on me, making sure I didn't pass out from the high amount of dread that had settled in my chest.

Dean on the other hand seemed to be lost in his own mind, his green eyes flickering side to side as he drove, lost in his own memories. Every now and then a smile would bless his pink lips, his tongue dragging over the bottom to coat the dryness. Every moment the corner of his mouth tilted up it felt as if his foot got heavier on the gas.

It took half the time it should have to get into Cicero, Indiana, stopping to drop Sammy off at the motel.

After grabbing his bag, he poked his head to look in the back of the Impala. "You going to be okay?" He asked softly.

"She's going to be fine Sam." Dean reassured before I had a chance to utter a word.

Sam rolled his eyes at his immature brother before looking at me once more, his gaze softer than it had been for a while. "Ky?" He asked gently.

"I'll be fine Sam." I answered, giving him a gentle nod.

He let out a breath and patted the frame before walking off, bag slung over his shoulder.

"You going to get up front sweetheart?" Dean called, already putting baby into drive.

I glanced out my window, watching as we slowly made our way out of the parking lot of the motel.

"No." I sighed, propping my elbow on the side of the door, putting my chin in my hand.

I listened as Dean hummed, his fingers bouncing off the steering wheel in a rhythmic tune. "What do you want me to say Kylie?" He asked, his voice almost too gentle to hear. "You want me to turn around? Get Sam and forget about this case? Hm?"

My gaze moved forward, a sense of annoyance and a slight hurt overcoming me. "No Dean that's not what I want."

I watched as the muscle in his jaw twitched. "Then what do you want?" He asked, clearly trying to bite back irritation.

I took a moment to pinch the bridge of my nose, to suck in a breath, and count to ten. If I didn't then I would snap and say something that I would regret.

"I want you to tell me that this is just a case." I let out after cooling down. "I want you to tell me that we aren't in Indiana because you want to hook up with Lisa again."

His fingers halted mid tap on the steering wheel, his shoulder rising as he sucked in a breath. "Is that what you really think I'm doing?" He shook his head. "God! What does it take for you to trust me. Sometimes-" He quickly halted, his lips turning into a tight line.

"Sometimes what?" I questioned with a cocked brow.

He paused, contemplating his words. "Nothing, just nothing."

The next half an hour in the car was filled with silence and tension. Dean and I weren't even able to look at each other, leading me to stare at the newly constructed homes of Morning Hill, all of them big and perfect.

Lisa's home was no different from the houses we passed, making me even more jealous of her than I was before.

Stepping out of the car, I stared up at the home noticing the festive balloons that were decorating the front, in the distance I heard the sound of children playing.

"Dean I thi-"

He was already gone, heading up towards the house quickly. Was it to get to Lisa? Or was it to get away from me?
