Red Sky at Morning (1)

Kylie's POV

I tapped my fingers against the inside arm rest of the Impala door, the boys were unusually quiet. Sam held a guilty look on his face that his brother and I were trying to figure out. What did the younger hunter do?

Sam kept making these faces at his phone, never once looking Dean or I in the face. I could tell that his brother was getting frustrated by the reddening of his face and the annoyed puckering of his lips.

"Alright." I announced, catching them both by surprise as I leaned on the seat between the two. "Are we going to play charades or is one of you going to talk?" I raised a brow.

"She's right." Dean glanced over at Sam. "I've been waiting since Maple Springs. You got something to tell us?"

Sam, the smartass he is, pretended to think. "It's not your birthday."

"No."

"Happy Purim?" The man in question pondered with a laugh. "Look guys, I don't know. I have no idea what you're talking about -'

"There's a bullet missing from the Colt." Dean cut him off angrily. "You want to tell me how that happened? I know it wasn't me." He glanced over his shoulder at me. "Was it you Kylie?"

I gulped, not that I was in trouble but the look Dean gave me sent shivers down my spine. "No." I whispered.

"No." He turned his head back to his brother. "If it wasn't me and it wasn't Kylie it has to be you. So unless you were shooting at some incredibly evil cans . . ." He trailed waiting for an answer.

Sam sunk down in his seat, his eyes cast down shamefully. "Dean . . ."

"You went after her, didn't you? The Crossroads Demon! After I told you not to." He scolded like the parent he secretly was to Sam. I watched the way his jaw clenched, the way it paused slightly just to click back in place.

"Yeah, well . . ."

"You could have gotten yourself killed! You could've gotten Kylie killed without her even knowing what was going on."

"Yeah well I didn't." Sam shrugged off as if Dean's words had no effect on him.

"And you shot her." He pointed out next.

"She was a smartass!" Sam exclaimed.

I watched the two bicker back and forth trying to decide who was right before I spoke up.

"Is Dean out of his deal?"

All went quiet except for the purr of the Impala's engine. Dean and I looked to Sam waiting and hoping for an answer, but we knew that if there was no happy news given to us earlier, then Dean wasn't out of his deal.

"Don't you think I might have mentioned that little fact?" Sam sighed. "No. Someone else holds the contract."

"Who?" Dean asked, his grip tightening on the wheel.

"She-she wouldn't say." Sam admitted lamely, his eyes once again casted down to his lap.

"Well now we know our next step is to find out who that is." I sighed, leaning back against the leather seat.

"Of course, our best lead would be the Crossroads Demon." Dean snarked before clicking his tongue. "Oh wait a minute . . ." He rolled his eyes.

"That's not funny." Sam mumbled.

"No, it's not!" Dean snapped. "It was a stupid freaking risk, and you shouldn't have done it."

I watched Sam's body tense in his seat. "I shouldn't have done it?" He twisted to face the driver. "You're my brother, Dean. And no matter what you do, I'm gonna try and save you. And I'm sure as hell not gonna apologize for it, alright."
