"Why are you leaving?" Regulus asked, a pang in his gut as he watched his older brother frantically toss together a bag while their mother screamed insults.

Sirius' head snapped up, silver eyes meeting Regulus' icy blue. He rushed forward and enveloped the smaller black in a tight but brief hug.

"Come with me, Reg. I can keep you safe, James wouldn't want me to leave you here," Sirius asked- no, pleaded. Regulus hesitated and opened his mouth to protest, but couldn't find a good reason to. As his boyfriend, Regulus wanted nothing more than to spare James the worry of having to fuss over him alone at Grimmauld Place, and Sirius knew that, but Regulus still wasn't sure. Would the Potters want a disgrace like himself in their house?

Suddenly feeling too exhausted (because of the lack of sleep and need to sleep with one eye open at Grimmauld Place), Regulus just offered his brother a small smile. "I know I'm going to regret this, but I'll come."

Sirius blinked, momentarily forgetting what they were doing. He expected the Slytherin to be much more stubborn. Nonetheless, he snapped out of it with a proud smile and grabbed his own bag, taking his brother's hand. "Alright Reggie, we don't have time to take any of your things so is there something you absolutely need before we go? Don't worry about clothes, I"m sure James will be thrilled to have you wear his."

Regulus blushed darkly but shook his head, checking that he had his bracelet even though he never takes it off. "Yeah, I'm good."

"Then lets get out of this hell hole."

It took a long time.

Too long.

But here they were, standing outside the Potter Mansion, and mansion was terribly an understatement. The last time Regulus had been there was the first, Christmas break of fifth (his fourth) year and he and James had been dating for about seven months by the time. Remus, who was and is dating Sirius, Peter, and Lily came too. Regulus got along with them a lot better than expected, especially Remus and Lily. They had a pretty cool bond.

Sirius breathed out and knocked on the door. It was late, close to midnight, but Regulus hoped they wouldn't be mad.

The door cracked open, and Effie gasped at the state of the boys. "Oh no, what did they do to you? Come in, sweethearts, I'll make you some hot chocolate and get James down here."

Regulus only just realized that he was shivering quite violently. He followed Sirius and sat down on the couch, curling in on himself a little. Sirius stared at the ripped pieces of tapestry, of his and Regulus' faces. They didn't mean much to him in the moment, all he wanted was to leave that place forever, but now the reality of everything came crashing down. They- him and their perfect Regulus- were disowned.

James flew down the stairs as soon as the words were out of his mother's mouth. As he saw the two disheveled and exhausted brothers, he enveloped his best friend in a tight hug, trying to express how much he loved and cared about them because he struggles to put it into words. Sirius got the memo though and hugged back tightly, grateful for the comfort.

Then James gathered his small lover in his arms and that's all it took for the tears to stream down Regulus' cheeks.

Truthfully Regulus didn't know why he was crying. Maybe because despite disowning him, Walburga and Orion were still his parents. Maybe he was tired. Maybe he was touch-starved. Maybe he was just really cold. Or maybe a combination of all four, and a mental breakdown would really be the cherry on top such an eventful day.

"You won't ever have to go back to them or see them again, doll," James promised. And Regulus believed him.

"I hope he doesn't regret this," Sirius murmured, a couple minutes after 2 am with the moon watching the four (Remus arrived as soon as Sirius wrote him a letter telling him he needed Moony cuddles and comfort). They were in James' room, Regulus passed out curled into James' side and drowning in one of the boy's hoodie which had been given to him when James had noticed his shivering. Remus had Sirius' head in his lap and gently created little braids here and there. "It was a decision I'm sure Reg made on the spot."

"He looks up to you," said Remus, voice sincere. "You're his older brother. Where ever you go he's not far behind. He has you, James, me, Lily, Marls, Dorcas, and Pete. You have us too, love. He's not going anywhere that you or James aren't."

"How are you so sure?"

"It's Regulus, love. He's smart and clever. He may be a bit of a follower but I feel you underestimate him too much sometimes. Reg knows what he's doing, and knows what he should do. As much as you might want to you can't shield him from every little thing, and that goes for you too Prongs. He can managed, you know he can. I'm not saying make him fend for himself, I'm saying that he knows how to make decisions for himself."

Sirius slowly nodded. Remus was too smart for him sometimes- no, all the time.

James kissed Regulus' forehead, thumbing at his side. "For now, he needs to rest."

Remus looked down at Sirius with a knowing smile. "You too, Mr. I-never-need-sleep."

Sirius cracked a smile and turned his head to kiss Remus' fingers that were gently caressing his skin before drifting off to sleep.
