LUCIEN STOOD IN FRONT OF THE CLOSED DOOR, RUBBING THE BACK OF HIS NECK AS HE RACKED HIS BRAIN for an answer. His sweater's usually soft fabric itched his skin, the tiredness of a week spent in slumber weirdly weighing him down. His foot stayed glued to the ground, Lucien afraid even breathing let alone moving would jump-start a conversation he didn't want to have. Not now, not ever.
He didn't meet Draco's gaze, he could feel the blonde's eyes on him, and decided his boots' worn out tips were good enough of a distraction. His eyes burned as he blinked away a few tears, he was not planning on putting on a show and guilt-trip the blonde boy into showing him pity.
Met with silence, Draco took a step forward and kept on speaking. "You're gone for a day, we ask around and nobody knows a thing. Snape comes and tells us you had to go home for some kind of emergency," he stopped to calm himself down. "A week passes by, you're still nowhere to be found."
He didn't want to let Draco get too close, hoping the distance would conceal his tired features. He was scared if Draco looked at him long enough in the eyes, he would be able to read his mind. Not in a way Snape did, but his best friend would instantly know Lucien was changed. The King boy would rather have his friends kept in the dark, that was why he dodged to the side before Draco could narrow the gap between them.
He sauntered over his bed and plopped down on the neat sheets, rushing both hands through his messy hair as he tried to stay collected. He wasn't worth the anger Draco was feeling, he wasn't a good enough man to spare even a thought. "It was urgent." His voice was small.
"So, you went home?" Draco questioned.
Home had become a distant word and feeling for Lucien ever since the moment he learned his parents were dead. Aunt Ramona had spent years making the boy feel like he had a family. The woman had succeeded until Snape meddled in and Lucien's past came into the picture. His old doings ripped every part of normalcy he had, he would have to fight against himself to get them back.
Wiping his clammy hands on his jeans, he focused on the patterns of the rug. His house's green crest made him sick to his stomach, Lucien realizing he had become another example for Gryffindors to use when bullying Slytherin kids. Lucien Aleister King, an okay kid turned into a mass murderer with the help of all-so-mighty Voldemort. Without looking up the meet Draco's eyes, he answered. "Yes."
