When Carina finally awoke it was light out. She took a minute to adjust her eyes to the light. Carina looked around and saw that Alice was gone now, a new girl taking her place. She studied the girl. She was young, maybe late teens early twenties. She had a cut on her forehead, blood staining her platinum blonde hair. Carina was just staring at her waiting for her to wake up so she could get help with finishing the task from the night before. Just then Carina began to hear footsteps coming down the hallway. It's light out. There's no way this thing operates during the day, is there? she thought.
She layed very still, eyes closed, waiting to see if she heard anything that could give her a hint as to where they were. She continued to hear footsteps and voices but they were too far to make anything out. She clung to hope, the idea of coming home to Maya and Gianna being the only thing keeping her sane.
She began to imagine what it would be like the day she finally got to come home. The feeling of finally being able to hug her daughter. Maya pressing her soft lips on hers while tightly embracing the both of them. Just then the loud clang of a metal tray hitting the floor snapped Carina back into reality. She jumped slightly at the sound making her anxious. She hoped that no one had noticed her startle and kept her eyes shut still hoping to get that hint. She listened carefully trying to decipher what the whispers in front of her cell were saying. Are they even speaking English, she thought. Carina placed all her focus on the words coming out of the people's mouths, It's Italian!
Now that she knew what they were speaking she was able to make out some of what was being said. It didn't help that the two assailants kept moving things around covering up their whispers only allowing Carina to overhear what was being said as they moved onto their next task.
"Penso che la bruna sia sveglia (I think the brunette is awake)," said one of the men.
"Non puo essere, abbiamo appena lasciato cadero uno dei vassoi e lei non si e nemmeno mossa (Can't be, we just dropped one of the trays and she didn't even move)," the other responded. Carina's entire body tensed when she heard that. The men slowly approached the cell, watching Carina as they slowly inserted the key into the lock. The men approached Carina, as she tried to remain completely still, her breathing even, and her eyes shut tight.
"Beh, cosa stai aspettando? Controlla se e sveglia! (Well, what are you waiting for? check if she's awake!), " ordered one of the men. Carina suddenly felt a pair of hands grab her wrists and force her up. She tried her best to remain limp and keep up the act but she couldn't. She had to fight. She had to get back to her beautiful daughter and wife.
Carina's eyes shot open, startling both of the men in front of her. Just then she remembered something Kepner had told her once. When confronted with an active shooter, tell them things about your personal life, it makes them less likely to kill you. But would that work on abductors? Carina decided it was worth a try.
"Mi chiamo Carina DeLuca. Sono una dottoressa al Grey Sloan di Seattle. Ho 39 anni e ho una bellissima moglie e una figlia. Il nome di mia moglie è Maya e mia figlia è Gianna, ha cinque anni (My name is Carina DeLuca. I am a doctor at Grey Sloan in seattle. I am 39 years old and have a beautiful wife and daughter. My wife's name is Maya and my daughter is Gianna, she's five years old)," Carina spoke anxiously. She was about to continue, deciding to tell them about her childhood in Italy, when a hard slap across the face interrupted her.
"Non mi interessa (I don't care)," scoffed the man, spitting out the toothpick in his mouth. He threw Carina against the wall, knocking the breath out of her and causing her to hit her head. Carina let herself fall to the floor defeated. Everything she had tried to do up to this point had failed. She wrapped her arms around her knees and finally broke down. This couldn't be what her life had become, she refused to believe it. Just as the cell locked she heard the men begin to speak again.
"Ha visto le nostre facce. Non e piu nel nostro interesse tenerla in vita. (she's seen our faces. It's no longer in our best interest to keep her alive.)" Carina tensed at the words. She began to panic. "Aspetta!(wait!)" she yelled. The men turned around and just stared at Carina waiting for something to happen. Carina just sat there, frozen, she wanted to bargain with them but she didn't think they would listen. She didn't know what to offer. "Farò qualsiasi cosa. Fammi vedere di nuovo mia moglie e mia figlia. Per favore. (I'll do anything. Just let me see my wife and daughter again. Please.)," Carina begged.
The men looked at each other as if contemplating whether they would listen to what she had to offer or not. "Qualsiasi cosa eh? (anything huh?)," one of them finally spoke up.
"Si, con una condizione (yes, with one condition)," responded Carina. "Cosa? (what?),"
"Dimmi dove siamo ( you tell me where we are)," proposed Carina. The men looked at each other and just laughed. "È divertente che tu pensi di essere in grado di porre condizioni ( Its funny that you think you're in a position to place conditions)," said the man.
"Fuck you!" spat Carina.
"Quando vuoi (anytime you want)," he smirked and walked away.
Carina felt helpless again. All she wanted was to hold her daughter and take in the smell of Maya's perfume one last time. She sat there waiting for night to come, hoping that one of the visitors would finally believe her. She stared at the girl in front of her who had yet to wake up when she suddenly remembered, "the toothpick!"
