• 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐀𝐔: There is a black mark where your soulmate first touches you. When they finally do touch you, it explodes into a multitude colors.
........
Cass was the only one in her family without a black mark on their body.
Dick's was on his hand, where Babs had touched it for the first time, way back then, when it was only him and Bruce. It was a beautiful mixture of blue and green.
Jason's was on his shoulder, where Artemis of Bana-Mighdall had put her arm. His was various shades of red and black.
Tim's was on his cheek, where a certain run-in with a blonde clad in purple had left him with red, purple, and black, looking forever like a bruise, much to his annoyance.
Damian had yet to meet his soulmate, but his mark was on his hand, just like his eldest brother's. Although, instead of being positioned as a high five, it looked like a handshake.
Nobody understood why Cass herself was without a mark.
Maybe her father carved it off of her when she was a child? Maybe she was the only person alive to be born without a soulmate, platonic or romantic?
Nobody really knew.
And Cass didn't mind it. Not really. She was okay without romantic love, as long as she had her family.
But, there were times. Times when she'd watch Steph force Tim to sleep by taking his device and collapsing on top of him, making it unable for him to love. Times when she'd see Dick deliver food to Babs when it was a slow night, and a kiss to the cheek when it was a hard one. Times when she'd listen to Jason banter back and forth with Artemis, unable to keep the love for her out of his voice. And she'd think to herself: I want that too. Why do I not get that?
But it didn't matter. Because she wasn't marked.
And then everything changed when she met Harper Row.
Harper was someone unlike anyone Cass had ever met before. She was unique, different.
Jus like Cass.
And she loved the blue-haired girl for it.
Cass didn't know where Harper's mark was, and she didn't ask. Why did it matter to her? No matter how deeply she feel in love with the girl, Cass knew deep down that they'd never be able to be together.
She couldn't take Harper away from her soulmate. That was unfair to everyone involved.
But then, the day came.
"Can I style your hair?" Harper asked, grinning at Cass.
Cass blinked, looking at her in confusion. They had never touched each other before, and Cass's hair was hardly long enough to style. What could she possibly have in mind?
Regardless, Cass trusted Harper. Loved Harper. And if she wanted to mess with Cass's hair, then by golly Cass would let her.
Nodding once, Cass turned to give Harper more hair to play with.
She closed her eyes when Harper's callused fingers carded through her hair. It felt good. Only her family had done this before, and it had felt amazing then.
It felt exhilarating now.
Then Harper gasped.
Cass froze and looked back at her, eyebrows drawn together in confusion.
Harper was gapping, a hand still in Cass's black hair.
"Harper?" Cass questioned, reading her posture.
She was... Excited. Happy?
Cass didn't understand. Why did Harper feel this way?
Harper didn't answer, so Cass reached over, poking Harper in the gut.
Harper grinned, the most genuine and happy grin Cass had ever seen, and lifted her shirt, just enough to reveal her bellybutton. Turning to the side, she exposed one dime-sized circle, filled in with a rainbow.
"Cass," Harper started, with that same butterfly-inducing smile, "We're soulmates!"
And Harper's body language showed that she believed this, that she enjoyed the fact.
But it couldn't be.
Because Cass didn't have a soulmate.
She said so. "But... I don't have a soulmate. I have no mark."
Harper looked around frantically in Cass's bedroom, where the two had been hanging out.
Spotting something glinting in the light, she lurched forward, grabbing the hand-held mirror and shoving it into Cass's hand.
"Look at your hair."
And Cass did, her eyes widening in shock immediately.
Because... Her hair. It was... So colorful. So, so colorful. It was a rainbow, starting with red on the left side of her head and fading into violet on the right.
Never before had she been so entranced by a rainbow.
"I... Have a soulmate." she whispered.
Harper was nodding. Her face must hurt, with how big the smile on her face was.
"I have a soulmate." Cass repeated, louder this time.
With a squeal, she launched herself at her soulmate, giggling happily.
She couldn't wait to begin her life with Harper Row by her side.
.....
I needed Cass with rainbow hair, okay? Don't judge me.
