"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray-"

Or: Tim and Steph are stuck under a building.
...

This was not supposed to happen. How did this happen. It was supposed to be happy what the fuck.

TW: explosions, death, trapped under a building

.......

It was supposed to be a simple night. In, and out, just bust a drug operation and go home.

But the world decided that no, that wasn't going to be happening.

Apparently it was a setup.

There was a bomb.

And now Tim was trapped under a building, his legs crushed, a pole piercing one of his lungs.

"Just hold on!" Dick ordered through the comms, because this was Dick, not Nightwing. Nightwing had disappeared as soon as he found out Tim and Steph were under the building.

Tim grunted, weakly squeezing Steph's hand in an attempt to comfort her.

She was cradling his head in her lap, tears streaming down her face as she made no attempt to silence her sobs.

It's all my fault. she thought, brushing some of his hair out of his face.

...

"What's that noise?" Robin asked, from where he stood beside his father.

The bats fell silent, all straining their ears to try and hear what their baby brother had heard.

Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.

"Bomb!" Red Hood snapped, "Everyone out, NOW!"

They scrambled, each heading in opposite directions to get out of the warehouse.

But Steph's leg had been broken, so she couldn't move faster than a limp.

Tim was beside her, helping her along as Cass cleared a path ahead of them, reaching the door.

"Go!" Tim had called to his sister. "We're right behind you!"

Cass had nodded, running out onto the street.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

"It's-" Steph gasped in pain, but fought through it, "It's getting faster. You need to go."

"Not. Without. You." Tim snapped, picking her up and beginning to run towards the door.

TICK. TICK. TICK.

They were 10 feet from the door when Tim suddenly tossed her into the air, closer to the door.

The warehouse exploded.

...

"S'not your fault." Tim whispered.

Steph didn't answer, just putting her forehead to his.

"Steph." Tim said urgently. "It's not your fault."

"Almost there!" Damian said, his voice breaking and causing static.

"Why didn't you just leave me behind?" Steph asked.

Tim smiled weakly. "Cause I lo-" he coughed. "I love you."

Steph let out a broken laugh. "That's not a good reason."

Tim looked at her, his eyes searching her face. "Can you honestly say that you wouldn't... Wouldn't do the same for me?"

Steph paused. "No... I. I would have."

Tim nodded. "Exactly."

The rubble above them shifted, causing dust to rain down on them.

"Sing?" Tim asked, "For me?"

"Tim-"

"Please?" he asked.

Steph swallowed thickly, before clearing her throat.

"You-" a deep breath "You are my sun... Shine. My only. Sunshine."

Her voice cracked, and she hiccupped through the tears.

"You make me happy. When times are." another crack. "Gray."

Tim smiled brushing a hand over her cheek.

"You'll never know, dear. How much I... Love. You."

His eyes closed, and his mouth let out a stuttered breath.

The comms were silent, the bats above them listening to her broken song as they rushed to get them out.

"Please don't take..."

His chest stopped moving.

"My sunshine..."

His hand fell back on his chest.

"Away."

She shakily lifted her hand to his neck, feeling his pulse.

He was dead.

Steph screamed.
