When Marinette and Alfred got home Marinette headed to her room to start unpacking. When she entered the hallway, she noticed something. The picture of the young Damian had been taken down.
She headed into her room, wondering what could've happened to the picture.
She started taking all of her clothes out and organizing them. Color order is how she liked it. She sorted everything and put them into her closet, taking about 30 minutes, and started to unpack her other suitcase.
Marinette unloaded all of the trinkets she had, taking out photo after photo of her and her friends. At the bottom of her suitcase, she had placed a particular photo. It was her favorite picture she ever took.
She picked it up and stared at it for a minute, then placed it on her nightstand.
"Mom...Dad...I wish you were here right now..."
Alfred knocked on her door. "Miss, dinner is ready." Marinette smiled and answered, "coming!"
She followed Alfred out the door and entered the big dining room. She sat down at the table where Bruce and Damian were already sitting. She served herself and sat down, starting to eat.
There was a very long awkward silence. No one knew what to do. *ding dong, ding dong* went the doorbell.
"I'll get it." Alfred said, getting up. He walked to the door and opened it. They heard him talking to someone and soon found out who it was.
Before anyone knew what was happening, Bruce, Damian, and Marinette were all crowded by cameras clicking, reporters talking and asking questions, and people writing things down on notepads.
"Smile, you look awkward." Damian whispered to Marinette. "For someone who gets angry when they're called 'birdie' you seem to know exactly how to put on a fake smile."
Damian rolled his eyes and smiled at the camera. Marinette plastered a fake smile on her face as well.
"You're Damian's girlfriend, right? What's your name?"
"Why did you choose to date him?"
"What's it like being an orphan?"
"Where did you used to live?"
"How's your new life?"
"How long have you guys been dating?"
The questions were thrown at them. Sometime directed to Marinette, some to Damian, some to both. Marinette felt overwhelmed. "Uh, well, my name's Marinette." They bombarded them with more questions, and this continued for what seemed like hours.
Finally Bruce was done. He yelled at the reporters to stop overwhelming the kids and leave. The reporters pouted, as they always do when Bruce shoos them away, but he wouldn't have it and pushed them out of the door.
Marinette and Damian collapsed on the couch, tired from the questions.
They almost passed out, but Bruce woke them up and told them to get ready for bed, as if they were little kids.
Before Marinette went to bed, Alfred went into the room to give her a book Alya had dropped off while the teens were bombarded with questions.
Marinette thanked him.
"Umm...Alfred?" she asked. He turned around in the doorway. "Hm?"
"Who were the people in the photo with Damian?" Alfred looked uneasy. "Please, I won't tell him what I know, I just...I want to know why he was so protective and angry when I asked him about it, and now it's down..."
Alfred gave a sigh and sat down on Marinette's bed. He patted the spot next to him for her to sit there. Marinette sat on the bed.
"Damian...he's had a rough life. I mean, he has to live without parents. Damian was very young when Bruce adopted him. When Damian was only 7-years-old, his parents abandoned him on Master Wayne's doorstep. He was very reluctant to take in the small helpless child. Of course, I couldn't leave him like that, so I convinced him to take the child in. He named him, Damian. He was cold, hungry, and tired. We gave him a bed, food, and warm pajamas that were too big for his size. From that day on, Bruce has taken care of him and loved him as his own, even making him the well-known sidekick of Batman: Robin.
Never would Bruce have thought of even raising a kid, and now, he has a son that he treats no differently than he would have if they were by blood."
"Wow...that's scary..." Marinette said, waiting for a bit to respond. Alfred got up and was about to leave, but turned around and said, "my point, miss, is that Damian might not look it, but he's very nice once you get to know him. His trial as a kid made him stronger, but also nicer."
Marinette didn't say anything and watched Alfred leave the room. She got ready and laid down in bed, folding her hands behind her head. But she couldn't fall asleep...she couldn't stop thinking about one thing; Damian and her weren't that different...in fact, they were very similar.............
