Leokadia

Casper and I walked along the hallway.

"What do you think about this recent development?" He asked me.

"They seem like nice people."

"Until they pin you down and an alien pops out of your chest." Casper screeched while gesturing.

"You watch too many horror films."

"And you're too trusting."

"I trust certain people like Val." I grinned.

"Ah, Valentine. The guy who makes girls drop at his feet and steps over them."

I gave Casper a look. He shrugged.

"Did anyone tell you that you're jaded?"

"All the damn time."

I giggled. "So, do you wonder about your mom?"

"Sometimes, but I wouldn't know what to do if I met her."

I glanced at Casper.

"What do you say to someone who left you on a doorstep?"

"Hey, I'm your kid." I shrugged.

Casper arched his eyebrow. We walked to class unaware someone lurked outside of our school.

I checked in all the windows of the school until I found him. My breathing hitched as he sat down in his seat. I pulled out the picture and glanced between the baby and the boy. Oh, my. He has grown into a handsome young man.

Seventeen years ago, I left him on the steps of that chapel. I kept my distance to protect him. I shivered and pulled my coat tight against my body, then turned and trudged through the snow. I hurried to my car, got inside, and waited.

All I wanted to do was hug him but keep him safe.

Casper

My sixth hour ended, and I grabbed my coat from my locker, then left to meet Rafe, Marty, and Leo. Damn, the weather turned colder. I shoved my hand into my coat pocket and hurried to the car.

"Casper?"

I stopped and turned my head to see a woman standing next to a car.

"Hey, what's the hold-up? I'm freezing my balls off!" Rafe said from his car window.

I glanced at Rafe, then at the woman. The woman started walking towards me until she reached me. I furrowed my brows.

"Oh, you've grown so much."

I stared at the woman as she reached for me. I stepped back, and she lowered her hand. I didn't know this woman, but she knew my name. Why?

"I didn't mean to scare you."

"Who are you?"

"I'm your mom."

My brows crumpled as I stood there frozen in my spot.

The woman averted her eyes. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come." She shoved her hands into her coat, pivoted, and hurried to her car. She got in and sped away. What the hell?

I walked to the car, got into the backseat, and sat there.

Marty and Rafe craned their heads.

"Who was that woman?" Marty asked me.

I looked at my cousins. "My mom."

Their brows lifted as I sat there, speechless. What do you say when a strange woman approaches you and claims she's your mom?
