The carnival

Leokadia

A carnival came town, and the Harpers took me. I walked towards the flashing lights and rides and stopped. The aroma of popcorn, cotton candy, and other foods floated through the air.

"What do you think?" Romeo asked me.

"It's crazy. There are so many rides and places to eat." I glanced at the brothers as they grinned.

"Which ride do you want to ride first?" Val asked me.

"You pick because I've never been on a carnival ride."

"We'll start small." Val strode towards the ticket booth and bought two wristbands. The other guys purchased a wristband, along with Elias and Tori.

Val attached my wristband around my wrist, then fastened his. Someone snaked their arm around my neck. I glanced at Casper.

"Hey, cuz."

I pushed off Casper's arm. "Do you mind?"

"Nope." He grinned.

"Which rides are you going on first?" Jordin asked us.

"Val's picking since I've never been on one."

Jordin and Casper shot each other looks.

"What?"

"Good luck." Casper chuckled.

Before I responded, Val grabbed my hand and dragged me to the Spine twister. Why do they call it the Spine Twister? We climbed the steps and got onto a ride. The worker buckled us in and instructed us to hold on to the bar. We waited until everyone was buckled into their seats.

I looked at Val. "Why do they call it the Spine Twister?"

The worker walked over to the controls and pressed start. The ride flung us around in the air and twisted us. I screamed and gripped the bar. I'm confident my spine twisted in different directions.

The ride slowed to a stop, and we got off. I rubbed my back as the brothers laughed.

"You should have seen your face! Oh, God! We're going to die!" Marty slapped his hands and laughed.

"Stop the ride!" Romeo laughed.

"Valentine! You're a dead man!" Rafe roared.

I turned to Val and gave him an unamused look.

"You told me to pick." Val shrugged.

I rolled my eyes. "How about a ride that's a less spine-inducing injury?"

"Fine." Val dragged me to another ride. It wasn't much better.

We got on the Scrambler. After everyone got on, the worker started the ride. The ride flung us back and forth as it twisted. Ugh. Why?

We got off the ride, and I lumbered away, trying to fall. Holy, hell.

An arm snaked around my waist and steadied me. "Are you okay?"

"I need to sit down."

Val nodded and led me to a picnic table. I sat down on a bench as he sat across from me. My stomach growled.

"What?"

"I'm getting hungry."

"What would you like?"

"I wouldn't mind pizza and a pop."

"Okay, I'll be right back." Val got up to get me a slice of pizza and pop.

I looked around as people roamed the carnival grounds and waited in line. While waiting for Val, someone slammed their hands on the table.

"It's interesting that you don't have your bodyguards protecting you."
