The girl who destroyed armies had longed to be free. The boy who stood still could bring mountains to their knees.

The bracelet on Maeve's hand wasn't enough to have Ryu relax but it did the job well enough. After Drayce had forced Maeve to work on the Adler case with her, she had spent a decent three hours down in the ring, mostly alone but sometimes with Vafril. Ryu could tell that Maeve's eyes were on her as she partied and thrusted—and they were still on her now when she led them to the private sector of the palace.

The bracelet was designed to shock the person who wore it if they attacked any palace members. There were different colors too—all based on energy levels. Red was the least harmful followed by orange, yellow, all the way up to violet. Then came black.

Black bands were reserved for the most dangerous criminals. Typically spies, assassins, all the people who were trying to kill royals. And in this case, a queen too. The black band also had the highest voltage. It was at least seven times stronger than the red bands and could cause temporary paralysis or death too.

Although since the Raskininan queen played with the sky in her spare time, Ryu doubted that the shock would do her much harm.

Pulling the key out of her pocket, Ryu inserted it into the keyhole before twisting it, waiting for the pop before she quietly opened it. She glanced back at the queen behind her and nodded for her to come in.

The simple room was warm as night fell, quiet as only the crackling sounds of the flame spitting out ashes was heard. There was a desk near the hearth, a bed across from it, and a small collection of books on the floating shelves.

Ryu led Maeve to the desk, satisfied to see the case file on the desk. "This is the Adler file," she said quietly. Her tone was completely contrary to how she was feeling in the interrogation room. "Let me know if you need anything. The phone is in the corner there and the bathroom is that door over there." She pointed to the various spots, making sure Maeve kept up.

Maeve nodded, her eyes floating around the place with resent or awe, she wasn't sure. Ryu took that as a cue to leave and quietly shut the door behind her, disappearing into the palace's many corridors, praying that involving a rival queen into their mess wasn't a mistake.
