Maeve walked through the gardens, her good hand wrapped around her elbow, which rested in a sling. The night covered the world with a blanket of glittering stars and the wind danced around, playing games of hide n' seek with the statues while the serpents slept. As her feet carried her forward, her mind was quiet. The night was one of the only places where she found comfort. Laying amongst the stars as they twinkled above. Every once in a while, she mustered up the courage to wonder what existed beyond the sky—beyond the universe. Was it the gods? The dragons which were spoken of in the lores? Maeve observed it silently as it came up next to her before slithering over her foot and coiling itself around her ankles. What the

It was beautiful. Maeve stood still as its tongue flicked out and slithered up her thigh before slowly reaching up her arm and shoulder.

"Hello," she murmured quietly, raising her arm to get a good look at it. "Who are you?"

The snake responded with a flick of its tongue before settling on her collarbone. Maeve exhaled gently, making sure not to startle it before taking a seat once more. The moon was bright today, illuminating the distant mountaintops in the distance.

Why aren't you asleep?

Her head snapped around to look at the snake. Her eyes narrowed, suddenly suspicious.

Are you a shifter? She asked telepathically and watched the snake as its forked tongue flicked out. Those beady eyes seemed to be digging holes into her skull and Maeve's hand lashed out, throwing it off. She heard the reptilian hiss in annoyance and it slithered up to the bench under the moonlight.
