CHAPTER FORTY

Good day children!

I'm so sorry I haven't updated this story in so long, I started up a secondary vigilante Deku story called 'Cheshire smile' and I've been working on that more than this one to get it out the past month.

(Feel free to check it out if you do please)

*shameful self promotion*

Aside from that! Here we go with another chapter of this book that comes from the depths of my mind, where my emotions reside.

(;

So, I'm a lazy little sheet and I have elected to do a time skip to the entrance exams!

And now let us begin!

PREVIOUSLY

They knew I was Quirkless and now they were going to just throw me out.

Regardless of how good I was at making drinks, or making food, all interest in being near me always dissolved once people knew I was Quirkless.

I'm just a useless, horrible inconvenience-

"Bro, that's so cool! I've never met someone without a quirk before!"

He was smiling.

Smiling?!

He didn't care?

I glanced at the others and they all had looks of pity, though I have never particularly liked pity, at least it wasn't disgust, or anger. At least they accepted me.

I smiled softly, looking at the ground.

"I- Uh- thanks! I guess. It is pretty rare nowadays. Haha..."

I rubbed the back of my neck and finally looked back up.

And I smiled.

A genuine smile.

They. Accepted. Me.

PRESENT

That morning, instead of waking up at the ungodly hours which I often thrive in, I was pacing a rooftop, contemplating every decision I've ever made to lead me to this point in my life.

Of course, I was in my Vigilante gear, but that's not important right now.

Well, maybe it was important, especially being that in my distracted, stressed state, I was unable to react fast enough to dodge an incoming capture weapon

* cough *

Scarf-

* cough *

"Well you seem distracted, thought I would jump in before you decide to 'fall' off another roof"

Eraser.

I'm not even sure he was attempting to hide the sarcasm on the 'fall' bit.

He wasn't wrong.

Aside from that- I couldn't really say nothing, or he might think that was ACTUALLY the reason I was up here.

So I just plopped down criss-cross applesauce on the flat concrete roof, and began speaking.

"Do you ever have an important decision to make, and you've been putting it off for a long time, but then the deadline arrives and you still haven't decided what you want to do, so you end up pacing a roof contemplating life and all the bad things that have ever lead you up to that point in time and you can't choose what you want to do, so you just stall until you have no choice but to make a decision, but you still can't choose what you want or need from that once in a lifetime opportunity, so you just want to sit down and cry?!"

"I will be completely honest with you. I only caught a few of those words, and I am slightly confused as to how you said that in one breath, but it sounds like you need to make a decision."

I let out a pitiful "mhmm" and he sat down across from me.

Mind you, I'm still 'captured' in his scarf.

"Well, I can't really help you unless I have details."

"I can't give you specifics, but... this choice could decide my future.
One option would let me fulfill my dream, but it's unlikely I'll achieve it... but there is a chance!
Another option is still good-ish and could let me live comfortably in the future because of how good it looks to employers...
and the last option capitalizes on my abilities and would put me close to achieving what I've always wanted to do...
but I might get myself into something where people might figure me out, cause I'll be in the spotlight for someone who COULD figure me out, but I also might fail in that, though it is highly unlikely that I will fail..."

"Well, I'd say the most practical option is the one that would place you close to what you've always wanted. Even if someone could figure you out, if it's more achievable than going straight for your dream, then I'd go for that one."

He gave me a soft smile and I tried to return one, though it came across as more of a grimace.

I took a deep breath, sliding back into my 'Grey' persona.

"I think you just suggested that one because it could lead to the stop of all this!" I pointed an accusatory finger at him, standing back up. Well, I pointed at him the best I could with my arms bound to my sides....

It was a halfhearted effort to improve the mood, which seemed to work, as he got the message that my little spirt of vulnerability was over, and joined the playful banter, though if you were to ask him, he would undoubtedly deny any and all of it.

"Well then, I might just have to take you in right now while I still have you, then"

His smirk was visible as he stood up, though only to the people who had known him for a good while, like I have. I mean, he did stop trying to capture me about eight or nine months ago, so we've gotten even closer in that time than we had since I'd been playing cat and mouse with him.

Though, to my surprise, he actually started dragging me along with him in the direction of the station.

"Wait, wait! No! I can't believe it! I can't believe you would do this to me! I feel hurt! Attacked! I've been betrayed!"

He continued to pull me along as if I was on a leash as he continued towards the station. I couldn't see it, but I could feel his smirk at the absolute sarcasm that just dropped from my voice.

I wriggled around in the scarf and actually started to worry when I couldn't get out of it.

"Wait... you're not ACTUALLY taking me in... right?"

"Nope, I'm going straight to the station with you."

Contrary to his statement, the scarf loosened and I slipped out.

"Oh no, looks like I've lost him. Oh well."

I smiled at the deadpan expression and the absence of any attempt at catching me again. I smiled as I slipped into a nearby alley and continued on my way to get back to the little bar where I currently lived so I could change and head over to the school of my dreams: U.A. High."
