SHE'S HOTTER THAN PHOEBE CATES
'Wait, so her name is Suzie?' Mike says, leaning forwards. El's continues to cling to his arm, a wide eyed expression on her face.
'Suzie with a "z".' Dustin nods. 'She's from Utah.' He hauls the duffel bag over his shoulder.
'Girls go to science camp?' Will asks. I punch him in the arm. 'Right. Sorry. You are amazing.'
'Thank you.'
'Suzie does.' Dustin says with a wide smile. 'She's a genius.'
'Is she cute?'
'Think Phoebe Cates, only hotter.' Dustin waves his hands around. He stands up. 'You wanna come with me to talk to her?'
'You bet,' I say with a grin.
Mike and Will exchange glances. It's glaringly obvious that neither of them believe Dustin. El just looks like she wants to go hang out with Mike.
I have faith in Dustin.
Mostly.
'What's going on?' Max asks as we pass the kitchen.
'Going to talk to Dustin's girlfriend.' Will says with an excited expression.
'Girlfriend?' Lucas and Max say at the same time, pulling away from the water.
'So, you think Dustin's lying or telling the truth?' Will whispers to me as we stop at the base of the hill.
I glance over at Dustin. 'I dunno. He seems pretty convinced.'
'I think she sounds made up,' Lucas says, just loud enough for Dustin to hear.
Dustin rolls his eyes. 'She's realer than you'll ever be.'
'What the hell does that mean?' Lucas frowns.
Mike laughs.
'El, what did you want to ask me?' I ask, walking beside her. She glances at Mike, momentarily disconnecting with him to walk with me.
'What is...sex?' El frowns her eyebrows furrowing.
My eyes go wide. 'Uh.'
'I heard Hopper say something to Joyce about it,' She shakes her head. 'Do you know what it means?'
'Uh...'
'What're you guys talking about?' Will asks.
'I asked Y/N what sex is,' El says bluntly.
'WHAT?' Mike's attention is suddenly on us and his face goes red. 'What about..that?'
'What does it mean?' El asks, getting even more confused.
'I'm going to let you handle this one,' Will says, hurriedly walking faster to catch up with Lucas.
Mike and I exchange looks.
'It's a thing...' I trail off, staring at my brother.
'That people do...'
'People?' El tilts her head to the side. 'Like everyone?'
'Not everyone,' Mike hesitates. 'Maybe you should just ask Joyce.'
El sighs. 'Okay.' Her face falls.
I take a deep breath. 'Alright, in simplest form..it's something that two people do together when they really, really, like each other.'
'Like you and Will?' El looks at me.
Mike's face becomes a total tomato. 'I'm out.' He runs off to join the others.
'Well,' I squeeze my eyes shut. 'Yes, but only when both people are ready.'
'So, what exactly is it?'
'You know how you and Mike kiss?' I start, trying not to burst out laughing, or fall down the hill.
'Yeah.'
'It's what happens after that.' I tap my fingers against my legs. 'The rest of it, would be better to ask Joyce...'
'Aren't we high enough?' Lucas complains loudly to Dustin.
'Cerebro works best at a hundred meters.' Is Dustin's answer.
'Thank you, Y/N,' El smiles gratefully at me.
'Sure,' I nod.
Jeez, someone needs to get this girl a book or something.
'You know, I'm pretty sure people in Utah have telephones,' Max pants, red hair plastered to her forehead.
'Yeah, but Suzie's Mormon.' Dustin explains.
'Oh, shit. She doesn't have electricity?' Lucas raises his eyebrows.
'Oh, that's the Amish.' Max corrects.
'What are Mormons?' Will asks.
'Super religious white people. They have electricity and cars and stuff, but... since I'm not Mormon, her parents would never approve.' Dustin sighs. 'It's all a bit...Shakespearean.'
'Shakespearean?' Max echoes.
'Yeah. Like Romeo and Juliet.' Dustin says fondly.
'Right.'
'Star-crossed lovers.'
'I got it.'
'Hey, guys!' Mike shouts from the back, pointing at his watch. 'This is fun and all, but, uh...'
'I have to go home.' El says with an apologetic look.
'We're almost there.'
'Sorry, man.' Mike sighs with a clearly not apologetic look on his face. I fight the urge to roll my eyes. 'Curfew. Come on, let's go.'
'Good luck.' El says.
'Curfew at 4:00?' Dustin frowns.
'They're lying.' Lucas says.
'It's been like this all summer.' Will sighs.
'It's romantic.' Max tries.
'It's bullshit.' Dustin says. 'I just got home. Well, their loss, right? Onwards and upwards! Suzie awaits!'
Will and I sigh.
Lucas, Dustin and Max turn, but Will remains rooted to the spot for a second. He stares at the ground, his hand going to the back of his neck again.
'Will?' I say quietly.
'Will, come on!' Dustin shouts.
Seemingly four hours later, Dustin announces.
'Made it.'
'Yeah, only took five hours.' Max retorts.
'Why couldn't we just play D&D?' Will scoffs.
Not only that, it then takes us another hour to set up the damn thing.
'Now, you ready to meet my love?' Dustin smiles, sitting down on the grass.
'Okay, sure.' I say.
'Yeah.'
Dustin switches the radio on.
'Suzie, this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over.' Dustin pauses, listening to the feedback. 'One sec. She's probably...She's still there. Suzie...this is Dustin. Do you copy? Over. I'm sure she's there. It's just...'
'Yeah.' Lucas says quietly.
'You know, maybe she's, like, busy or...It's around dinnertime. Suzie, do you copy? This is Dustin. Over.'
Oh dear.
