I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE...BILLY AIN'T GOOD NO MORE
'Holy shit, I can't believe we're really doing this,' Max says, staring down at the board.
'Ready?' I ask, looking at El.
'Ready.' She nods.
El spins the bottle.
It lands on-
'Mr. Wheeler,' We all say at the same time.
'Ugh. Boring,' Max groans, rolling her eyes.
'Yeah, boring.' El agrees.
'Spin it again,' I suggest.
'Against the rules?' El frowns slightly.
'We make our own rules.' Max smiles.
El spins it.
'Billy.' Max says. 'Okay, look, I should just warn you, if he's with a girl or doing something gross, just get out of there right away before you're scarred for life.'
'Noted,' I say, sitting down beside El.
'Like, seriously. Get out of there.'
'Max...' El says.
'No, I'm just saying, I'm serious.' Max points out. 'He's really gross.'
'Max!' El laughs.
'Okay, shutting up now.'
I close my eyes, letting the familiar darkness welcome me.
El stands next to me in the void, staring ahead at someone on the ground. We walk closer, until the figures become sharper; more focused.
It's Billy.
'I found him.' El whispers.
'What's he doing?' Max asks, her voice echoing in my ears.
'I don't know.' El frowns.
'Don't be afraid.' Billy's whisper sounds strange coming from in front of us. It sounds louder than it should, like he's all around us.
'He's...' I trail off. 'On the floor...'
'It'll be over soon.'
'-Talking to someone.' El finishes.
'Just stay very still.'
We walk closer. He's kneeling down, with his back to us. El reaches out-
'El,' I say, pulling her hand back.
Billy whips around, seemingly staring right at us.
El and I let out consecutive gasps, backing up. Just as Billy starts to fade, El whips off the blindfold and we're back.
Her eyes are wide with shock.
'What is it?' Max asks. 'What happened?'
I can't even begin to explain.
Halfway through the story, I feel a jolt in my chest. It's like a burst of sadness, anger and betrayal, all at the same time. I stop mid-sentence, staring at the ground.
Will.
'Y/N, are you good?' Max frowns. I look back up at her, nodding slightly.
'Look, I don't know what we saw back there,' I say, sighing. 'But uh- there's something wrong with Will...I should go.'
