CAN WE PLEASE JUST PLAY DND NOW?
'Oh, you found Ralph Macchio,' Max laughs as El studies her magazine. I lean over, rolling onto my back. My own magazine falls to the floor, landing in a heap on El's carpet.
'Macchio?' El tips her head to the side, tracing her finger on the page.
'Yeah, he's the Karate Kid.' Max nods, smirking. 'Hai-yah! He's so hot, right? I bet he's an amazing kisser, too.' she grins looking over at me. 'Hey, uh...is Will a good kisser?'
'I don't know,' I say, hiding a smile. 'I wouldn't have anyone else to compare him to.'
I close my eyes for a second, remembering all our stolen moments in Castle Byers..the conversations between chaos that felt like forever.
It might not have been forever, but it was my forever.
'What about Mike?' Max turns to El. 'Is he a good kisser?'
El thinks about it, sighing. 'He's my first boyfriend.'
'Ex-boyfriend.' Max corrects. She second guesses herself, pausing. 'Hey, don't worry about it. Okay? He'll come crawling back to you in no time, begging for forgiveness. I guarantee you, him and Lucas are, like, totally wallowing in self-pity and misery right now.'
I roll my eyes. 'Definitely. Mike's an idiot.'
'They're like, "Oh, I hope they take us back."' Max laughs. 'God, what I wouldn't give to see their stupid faces.'
Slowly, El starts to smile. She glances at me and my eyes widen.
'You aren't seriously thinking we should...'
'What is it?' Max looks between the two of us, a confused expression on her face.
Ten minutes later, El sits cross legged in front of her dresser. The static on the radio is blaring and her eyes are covered with a blindfold. I sit next to her, eyes closed, my hand in hers.
Darkness is completely covering my senses, and the static buzzes faintly in my ears.
'Is this really gonna work?' Max whispers, shifting her position in front of me. 'Holy shit, this is insane.'
'Max.' I say.
'Yeah, quiet. I'm sorry.'
'-What's wrong with me?' Mike's faint voice says. The void begins to clear and I can see the boys. Will's hard at work setting up their DnD campaign. However Mike, well...he's laying on his back on the couch stuffing his face with nacho chips. Lucas is sitting on the other end, seemingly consoling him. 'What did I do wrong?'
'Nothing.' Lucas says, shaking his head.
'What did I do wrong? What could I have done wrong?' Mike shoves another handful of chips in his face.
'Do I have to go through this again?' Lucas sighs.
El and I glance at each other.
'We see them,' El says.
Max's voice cuts through the darkness. 'What are they doing?'
'Eating.' El replies.
'Talking about their misery,' I add.
'I just don't understand what I did to deserve this.' Mike groans.
'Nothing. Nothing. That's my whole point.' Lucas says loudly. 'You are the victim here.'
I laugh. 'He says he's the victim.'
'Are you serious?' Max snorts.
'I know. It's just, why is she treating me this way?' Mike says.
'I don't know.' Lucas shouts. 'Mike...' Lucas trails off as Mike opens his mouth to yell again.
'What did I do wrong? WHAT DID I DO WRONG?!'
'Mike, stop.' Lucas says. 'Relax. Just relax. Okay? Stop asking rational questions.'
'I know, I know, you're right.' Mike sighs. 'Yeah. Because women act on emotion and not logic.
'Precisely. It's a totally different species.' Lucas adds.
My mouth drops open.
'They say we are "species."' El says.
'What?' Max gasps.
'"Emotion, not logic."' El glances at me.
'What?'
'Poor Will,' I sigh, shaking my head.
'Forget Will! What else do they say?' Max asks urgently.
'Guys, it's ready.' Will says, looking up from the board.
'Will, not right now.' Lucas snaps.
'They broke up with you.' Will rolls his eyes. 'What else is there to talk about?'
'Tons!' Lucas says. 'Just because you're still with Y/N-'
'Leave Y/N out of this!'
Oop-
'We're trying to solve the great mystery of the female species.' Mike chews loudly, then he burps. The sound reverberates around the void and I cringe. 'Dude, you can smell the nacho cheese.'
'Gross,' I wrinkle my nose.
It only gets worse when Lucas opens his mouth.
'I got that beat.'
'What?' Mike frowns, then his eyes widen in realization. 'Oh, no. No, Lucas, no. No! Lucas! Lucas!'
I flinch, breaking contact with El at the same time as she rips off the blindfold.
'What happened?' Max asks.
El starts laughing, falling back on the carpet. I join in, half choking on air.
'Hey!' A loud voice says from outside the door. 'Hey!'
'Shit, it's Hopper,' I say quietly.
'When I say three inches, three...' He barges in, a surprised expression on his face when he sees Max and I.
'Do you knock? Jeez!' Max says loudly.
'Yeah! Jeez!' El echoes.
'Oh, hey.' Hopper puts his hands on his hips. 'I'm sorry. I thought that, uh...'
'Mike's not here.' I say, surveying the state that Hopper is currently in.
Which is drunk.
'Max and Y/N wanted to have...' El trails off, trying to find the right word. 'a sleepover. Is that... okay?'
'Yeah.' Hopper nods quickly. 'Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Your parents know about it?'
'Yup.' Max says and I nod.
'Uh, yeah, it's cool.' Hopper mumbles. 'Yeah. That's... That's really cool.'
'Did you need something?' Max asks sarcastically.
'No, no. Uh, I'll leave.' Hopper stammers. 'I'll just let you... I'll leave you...'
