WHEN WE REACH THE END
Unfortunately the lady at the front desk decides to question us as we try to sneak by.
She crosses her arms, placing her phone down on the counter.
'Excuse me, where do you think you're going?'
'Oh, um...' Nancy brightens her tone, forcing a smile. 'I was just going to visit my grandma again. And... And this...this is my family.'
El smiles with too many teeth.
Jonathan grimaces, which might have been a try at a positive expression.
Will shifts his weight awkwardly.
Max lifts her hand in half a wave.
The skeptical desk lady surveys us, her eyes landing on Lucas.
'Extended.' He grins, shrugging.
'I don't care who they are,' The lady snaps, shaking her head at us. Her dangly earrings clang against her necklace. 'You know the rules. Two visitors at a time.'
Nancy opens her mouth. 'Yeah, but...'
'Two!' She gives us one last disapproving stare, picking up her phone again. 'Girl, this child has lost her mind. She brought a whole zoo in here,' She mutters to whoever on the phone.
Jonathan and Nancy exchange glances, hurrying by.
'Don't do anything stupid,' Nancy says to Mike.
'Why me?' He glares.
Lucas and Mike take seats close together while El and Max cluster on the waiting couch. Will and I look at each other, sitting in the two end chairs.
'That was anticlimactic,' I comment, pulling out a magazine from the rack.
'Yeah,' Will says, scratching the back of his neck.
'Is he here?' I ask, looking around.
'Is who here?'
'The Mind Flayer?' I say.
Will's eyebrows furrow. 'My neck was just itchy.'
'Oh.'
'You want something from the vending machine?' Mike asks loudly, standing up.
'Sure,' I shrug.
He and Lucas walk over to the metal snack bar, inserting several coins.
I watch with amusement as their snack gets stuck halfway.
Will snickers beside me.
'Oh, come on, you piece of shit!' Mike yells, smacking on the glass.
El flicks her head from the other side of the room, causing half of its contents to come spilling out onto the ground.
'Thanks,' Mike says with a slight smile.
'Dude, I think that was it,' I hear Lucas mutter to Mike.
'That was what?'
'The olive branch.'
Of course, he's still trying to get Mike and El back together.
To be honest, I'm a total Mileven shipper, but maybe this really isn't the best time.
'What're you thinking about,' Will asks, leaning towards me. 'You've got that expression on you're face.'
'What expression?' I say, smiling.
'The one that you always have when you're thinking hard,' the corner of his mouth turns up in a smirk. 'Good screams?'
My mouth drops open. 'William Byers!'
He laughs. 'I'm just kidding.'
'How did you even know about that?'
'I guessed,' Will says, throwing an M&M in the air and catching it in his mouth.
'Got it, two in a row!' Lucas is saying to Max across the room. He not-so-subtly winks at Mike. 'That was good, that was good. Best three in a row now.'
'Time to watch the show,' I whisper, nudging Will. He glances at Mike who sits down beside El.
'This should be good.'
'Does your species like M&M's?' Mike asks, holding out the bag.
El just looks at him, reaching her hand out. 'I like the new look, by the way.' Mike says. 'It's cool.'
'Thanks.'
And then the lights start flashing.
'Somethings wrong,' Will says, standing up.
'Now is it him?' I ask, getting to my feet.
'I think so,' Will turns to look at me. 'He's....doing something. Something bad.'
'What's he doing?' I say, dreading the answer.
'I don't know,' Will winces, bringing a hand to the back of his neck. 'Where's Nancy and Jonathan?'
'They should've been back by now,' Mike comments, a worried expression on his face.
'Do you think something happened?' Max asks.
'I think we need to go,' I say.
'Now!' Mike says as the lights flash faster and faster.
We run down the hallway, passing several dead bodies. That's never a good sign.
The lights overhead continue to flicker wildly, periodically forcing us to run through pitch blackness.
What we see when we get to Nancy and Jonathan is worse than I ever would've imagined. A six feet tall monster, made with burnt flesh and other bubbling chemicals is standing over Nancy.
El brings her hands forward, throwing the monster at the wall. It flies against the plaster, cracking it; before it has time to react, is thrown out the window, crashing down below.
'What the hell was that thing?' Max gasps.
