The main characters of this story COULDN'T be characters without comparing them to some very famous superheroes. The Umbrella Academy is a story about a group of 7 superpowered siblings who try to prevent the world from inescapable apocalypses.
Everyone is one of these seven siblings, let's see who Andrew and his friends are.
Andrew Detmer - Number Seven: Viktor Hargreeves/The White Violin
Without a doubt, Andrew is Viktor Hargreeves. If it's not the Daddy issues, it's the hidden power, familial bullying, just plain bullying, and (not-so) accidentally using their powers to cause cataclysmic events. When they're not a mindless raging person, which rarely happens anyways, both Andrew and Viktor are very sweet, shy, talented people who love being with and having friends. An even bigger parallel is that both of them snap and use their powers to fatally injure someone they consider family, and that is the starter of their slow decent into eventual chaos. Also, they both wear very simple, darker colored outfits.
The Man (In Black) - Number Five: Five Hargreeves/The Boy
Five Hargreeves is one of the most powerful members of the Umbrella Academy, and he's not afraid to show it. The Man is Andrew's equal in terms of power, and like Five and Viktor, they understand each other well. Five's powers often brought him trouble, especially when using them incorrectly, just as The Man struggles with his own powers. The Man is bold, quick to anger, and intelligent beyond his years, feeling like an older man trapped inside a younger man's body, same as Five. The Man has a distant relationship with his family, but would still protect them with his life, and always makes sure that his way is right way and the only way. Unless his way doesn't involve coffee, then he'll always go the coffee way.
Steve Montgomery - Number Three: Alison Hargreeves/The Rumor
Allison Hargreeves has it all, or so it seems from the outside. Her constant fame and perfection make her seem like nothing is wrong. However, just like Allison, Steve's family is cracked on the inside, and he isn't the perfect class president everyone believes him to be. They both have a strong connection to the Luther Hargreeves of their family, understanding him and trying to give him a direction in life. Allison has taken care of Viktor to the best of her ability, trying to be the older sister Viktor always wanted, similar to Steve who only wanted to be Andrew's friend and help him be the kid Steve sees he can be. That only works for a short time before both Allison and Steve are wounded. Everyone has arguments, right? Just... most don't end in throat slashing or lightening bolts.
Matthew Garretty - Number One: Luther Hargreeves/Spaceboy
Okay, I think Luther Hargeeves and Matt Garretty is a total no-brainer. Luther Hargreeves always strived to be the leader, to get attention. However, he and Matt never really got that attention they so desperately wanted. Luther has a questionable relationship with Viktor, constantly trying to limit him, as Matt limits Andrew. Luther has a very close relationship with Allison, just like Steve and Matt are good friends. Matt believes in family love, and refuses to see the terrible actions another family member commits until it is far too late. Luther also thinks more with his strength than his mind, Matt quickly rushes to anger and doesn't immediately think logically. Oh, and they also have these weird smiles that no one can unsee.
