the house was empty but really it's just dad and cynthia at work like any other day. i walked into my bedroom, quietly locking the door behind me before stripping down my school clothes into clothes that felt better to just let myself go in. there i headed out to the kitchen for a nice snack, only to forget that there's barely any food in the fridge because of that one movie night cherry and marcia had planned out, i groaned and banged my head onto the fridge door.

i looked through the cabinets for any other boxed snacks but there wasn't a single thing that was considered good for my age, just prunes or whatever grown adults eat these days. i went upstairs and grabbed a few dollar bills along with my house keys, going back downstairs and out the front door. i trailed down the road on my baby blue bike, greeting the elders who lived side to side from each other.

the store was pretty much packed, women with their kids, greasers screwing up the store, and just people minding their own business. i grabbed the necessities i needed before going to checkout, it was a long line, i was near the aisles. my sneakers tapped against the floor until a deep voice sprung out of nowhere.

"y/n? is that you?"

i turn around to see darry standing behind me, with a shocked face. "oh, hey darry."

"long time no see, how's your dad?" he asks.

"he's doing alright, he's busier than ever but i'm sure he's fine." i replied.

"you and pony alright, haven't been seeing you around the house lately-"

"god, why does everyone keep asking me that?!" i snapped, throwing the snacks to the ground.

i started heading towards my bike when a tight grip wrapped around my arm, darry was right there trying to get ahold of me, i yanked myself out and just stood there waiting for him to get a word out.

"you tell me right now, what has been bothering you?"darry asked firmly.

"look, dar, i ain't mad at you but-"

"it's pony, isn't it?" darry asked, i shrugged. "y/n, that was last year, and you still haven't forgiven him-"

"darry, my mom is probably looking for me so just please." i know that was all a lie but i don't remember telling them about my parents divorce.

"liar, your mom lives in winsconsin with her boyfriend." darry corrected me.

"and how do you know that?" i sassed.

"she called me last month to check up on pony, that's besides the point." he shook his head. "did something happen between you and pony or not?"

"yes, but i'm not telling you why." i finally said.

"wasn't asking for the last part but if you really got to go, then you could've just said so." darry sighed.

i nodded, getting on my bike empty handed, sending darry a little wave from behind. if there was a moment where i had to be honest about darry, it'd be me being confused on how darry would act if something bad happened to my relationship with the gang, you don't know if he's mad or just plain about it like the others. he just doesn't show emotion is what i'm saying.

ponyboy looked like the nice guy from the first day we met, the day i accidentally bumped into him while grabbing lunch with a couple of friends, he just seemed so innocent with a sly smirk along with johnny, dallas, not so much.

it was where i thought they were my people
