We make it to the cave and I sit against the wall. I look at the ground trying to forget that this is a small space. "So Alex," Arya says clearly trying to get rid of some of awkwardness. "You look old enough, were you in university?"
Just like that the walls start to close in on me and my breathing becomes small intakes. Since my body won't let me stand I crawl out of the cave. I hardly even notice that the rain has stopped. Once I get to an open space I lay on my back and try to calm myself down. "Alex?" Arya walks over and lays down beside me. She rest her head on my chest and I quickly move away and sit up. She sits up as well with a look of disappointment crosses her face. "What happened?"
I hug my knees and breathing finally becomes normal. "It's nothing." I mumble not daring to look her in the eyes.
"It's obviously something," She puts her hands on my cheeks and forces me to look at her eyes. "You can tell me."
I sigh loudly. "Ok." She smiles but I can't even force one back.
"I went to school to become a vet. But I hand to drop out."
She raises an eyebrow. "Why?"
I bite the inside of my cheek, this is the part I didn't want to tell her. "I had a girlfriend, her name was Melanie. She was beautiful, flowing red hair, green eyes. She didn't care about what people thought of her."
I weakly smile but my vision starts to blur with the tears that are forming. "We went to a party and halfway through I saw her cheating on me." This time I look at Arya's face. She looks indifferent. "I got so mad," I take I deep breath, not letting the tears fall. " and I killed her."
This time her eyes widen. "What?"
"I killed her." I look back at the ground.
"You're a monster," I hear her whisper. "To think I liked you." She growls and this time my eyes widen. She likes me?
"Arya listen to me ok? I'm sorr-"
"No Alex! Don't you dare say sorry to me! You killed someone!" She stands up and runs away.
Just as I'm about to run after to her some unknown forces makes me stay. She's right, I am a monster. I've killed people and on more than one occasion.
"I like you too Arya." I say to the air and wipe away a tear that's finally fallen.
