Chapter 9

Nina was awoken by a bright light that shined through the fainted pink curtain. She also smelled eggs and bacon in the air, it reminded her of the days when her mom had been alive, her dad would have made bacon and eggs. She looked around to search for River but couldn't see him, so she got out of bed, grabbed her royal blue robe and headed downstairs. As she walked down the stairs the smell of delicious food got stronger.

"Mmmm... That smells soo good." She said as she stood on the kitchen door.

"Of course you would, you always like my food." He said as he placed two plates of breakfast on the table.

Nina and River sat in front of their plates silently enjoying their food. Half way through their meal they heard the front door open and close, and heard heavy footsteps headed to the living room. "NIN-A WHERE ARE YOU?" Jack yelled.

Nina stood up and motion River to stay silent, while she walked towards the living-room. "Dad, I'm here. Where is Scott?"

"Scott is at his house, he drove me to our street when I woke up on his couch. I guess I drank too much again. Oh well. Screw that. Get me a beer and some of that yummy breakfast. It smells so damn good. Now move it."

"Ok just give me a sec and I'll be..." She said but stopped when she heard a noise from the kitchen.

Nina hoped that her father hadn't heard it but he did as he got up and walked towards the kitchen. Nina tried to stop him but he pushed her away hard to the wall. Jack peeked into the kitchen and found River about to close the closet's door.

"WHO THE F**K ARE YOU? HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET IN? ..." He looked at River to Nina then back to River and his face became red. "YOU F**KEN WHORE, HE SLEPT OVER WITH YOU. YOU DIRTY WHORE... GET OUT OF MY HOUSE BOTH OF YOU OUT. NOW. I WON'T HAVE A WHORE UNDER MY ROOF."

Jack walked towards the table, grabbed the two half full plates and threw it at River. Nina saw what her dad was about to do when he lift the two plates of the table, she ran in front of River to protect him as the plates hits the wall beside them and shattered into many pieces. Nina felt surprised at the sudden attack, and as her father called her a whore, her legs became like Jell-O. She felt tears fall down her face as her pharynx started to become tighter. Throughout her whole life, she had never heard her father called her a whore before. As her father continued yell whore, River tried to calm down and explained but her father wouldn't listen. Nina couldn't listen to her father as he called her a whore; she needed to leave, to get some air into her lungs. Without thinking what she was doing, she ran out of her house and onto the sidewalk. While she breathe in air she started to feel dizzy more and she heard footsteps coming towards her.

"Nina, wait up." River said as he walked closer to her.

She turned around to face him, but when she opened her mouth to speak she couldn't. She didn't know how to explain what had just happen. River step forward and wrapped his arms around hers as he shhh her. "Nina it's ok. You don't have to talk."

"Oh... River... He's not always like this."

"Shhh it's ok.. Just breathe."

"But I can't, I have to explain."

"Shhh no really, it's ok. You don't have to explain anything until you're ready."

"O... Ok."

"Let's go somewhere, where we can both calm down."

"Mmhm... But we can't... Not like this."

"Uh... Like what?" He asked as he looked down then at her. "Oh... never mind... Well I don't think we could go back inside? Well then we could go to my place and change."

"Mmhm I think that's a better idea"

"Now we need to figure how to get there because I don't think it would be a good idea to take the bus."

"Umm... Well we could borrow my neighbor's car. Stay here and give me a sec."

Nina walked across the street but as she was half way on the street, she suddenly felt an intense pain on her right lower abdomen. She grabbed her abdomen to ease the pain but made it worst, that she fell onto her knees. She heard River shouted out her name but his voice faded away by a sound of a car. Everything had happen so fast that she didn't know what to do; she knew she had to move but she was into much pain to move. She tried to get up but every second that she tried to move, the car had moved closer. Nina closed her eyes for she didn't want to see her death, she was ready to feel the front of the bummer to touch her but when a few second went by and she felt nothing. She opened her eyes to see darkness around her and felt something against her cheek. As she breathe she felt the heat of her breath against her face, like it got reflect something.

Just then a flash of light shined through Nina's eyes as she felt herself become little lighter. She closed her eyes again for a moment, then opened it and saw River face.

"Nina, are you ok?"

"Umm I don't know, what happen..?"

But before she could finish her sentence, the driver of the car asked, "Are you guys alright? Is anyone hurt? I tried to stop the car."

"I think so, Nina are you alright?" He asked as he slowly got off of Nina.

"I don't know, everything just happen so fas... River you're bleeding.

"I'm ok it's just a few cut on my arm."

"No look at your robe..." She said when he was fully off of her; she stared at a big blotch of blood.

"Nina, it's you." He said as he knee down and examined her.

He slowly pushed her robe away and his skin turn pale. "Did you call 911? Call them, she bleeding a lot. We need to stop it."

The young man took his cell phone and called. While the young man talked to the operator, River opened Nina's robe more and they both saw a broken piece of the porcelain plate stuck out of her right lower abdomen. Nina started to feel a strong burning pain and saw white spots everywhere. River placed pressure around the shard to stop the bleeding.

"Hey do you have first aid kit in your car." River asked to young man.

"Yeah.." He replied as he ran to his car.

"I'm feeling cold, River, really cold."

"It's ok Nina, I'm right here, I'll keep you warm." He said as tears flowed down his cheek. "Dammit, you're losing too much blood and I can't tell how far in is the shard."

"River I'm scared, I'm not ready to die."

"I'm right here, Nina. I won't let you go. You're not going to die." He said as he held her right hand and continued to place pressure around the wound.

As soon as the young man came back with a first aid kit, River commanded him to place his hand on the wound with pressure. As River went through the first aid kit, people started to crowd around them and offered their help. River opened a package of alcohol wipes and cleaned around the wound. As soon as River cleaned the wound, the ambulance arrived.

River moved away so the two young paramedics could work on Nina, while they both worked on Nina they talked to her to try to keep her awake. By the time the paramedic strapped her on to the gurney and into the ambulance. Nina felt very tired and was ready to fall asleep, and the pain around the shard started to ease up until she felt no more pain. Nina felt numb throughout her body and soon her eye lids became heavy that she closed her eyes. As soon as Nina went unconscious, the paramedic tried to wake her up and Nina began to have difficulty breathing. The electrical wave in her heart started to die down until it became a flat line.
