Chapter Sixteen:
The food sitting in front of me terrified me, I didn't know if I should eat it or not. My father had already warned me that emit eating was apart of my punishment so this could be apart of a test. I had a choice:
Eat and have my father beat me to death, or not eat and risk having Kayln upset with me even more then he already is.
I'd rather have Kayln upset with me. There's more that I can do to fix that then to fix the beating that I'm going to receive after he leaves tonight.
"So Kayln," my father begins. "I wasn't informed you were coming tonight." He looks at me and my uneaten food seeming almost glad. "How are you?"
"I'm good sir, how's the job?" Kayln says.
I'm so going to die tonight.
"The job is fine, I'm up for a promotion so keep me in your prayers."
Yeah, and me.
"Oh, I hope you get it sir." Kayln says looking at me and my untouched plate. I lift my fork and start moving the food around as my father watches with one eye making sure nothing touches my lips.
"Kayln," my mother says trying to get both of their attention. "I'm so glad you could join us tonight! How is your mother!"
Mom please stay silent, I don't want you getting hurt too.
Kayln's eyes lifted from my plate and met my mothers happily, he seemed grateful for the distraction.
"Well thank you for inviting me Abigail!" If my father wasn't listening he was now. His eyes had jumped from me to my mother in a second and they weren't leaving.
Kayln doomed us without trying.
My mother was strangely calm even with my fathers eyes watching her every move, she seemed like she didn't even mind it at all. "It wasn't a problem at all Kayln, I'm glad you could come."
Daddy seemed to get angrier with every word she said but Kayln didn't seem to notice. I put my fork down, now too uncomfortable to even be holding it in this situation. Mom was now doing what I was doing; moving food around on her plate to make it look like she was eating the meal she cooked for dinner.
Why did I let Kayln drive himself over here?
I grabbed my phone from my back pocket trying to move as little as possible as I sent a quick text to Kayln turning my sound off.
Let my mom drive you home.
His phone chimed from his jacket in the other room and he quickly excused himself to go get it. My father remained staring at my mother as her eyes fell onto her plate defeated by his gaze.
What, why?
Please, let my mom AND I drive you home. Tell Callie or someone to come get the truck.
Is there something you aren't telling me?
No, I'm alright. Just please do us a favor.
He returns a second later with his cellphone in hand mumbling something about his mom and how she misses him.
"Well it is a moms job!" My mom said immediately putting her face back on. "We need to miss our sons and daughters in order to be great parents!"
"Isn't that the truth Abigail." Daddy says as he raises his beer in the air. My eyes flicker to moms and they lock with mine as we both look to Kayln.
He knows.
It's all my fault he knows, I couldn't just take the beating like I always do. I couldn't just let it happen and take the stupid beating like it usually does. No.
