As I opened my eyes to see my bedroom ceiling, a groan left my lips. I felt like shit. That 45-minute walk home had done more damage than I thought, especially since it was also a goddamn school night.
I rolled over in bed and suddenly heard a voice down the hall say, "Y/n Campbell! You were supposed to be at school 10 minutes ago." Another groan left my lips, and my bedroom door suddenly opened. "You are going to school whether you like it or not. And don't blame me just because you went to a party last night." My mother said as she opened my curtains, letting the bright sunlight into my room.
"How did you know I went to a party last night?" I said, my voice raspy as I sat up in bed.
"Mrs Wheeler called, said that Nancy came home very late last night and said you and her were at Steve Harrington's house. Care to explain yourself?" She said, standing in front of me with her hands on her hips.
"Ugh!" I completely forgot about last night. Jesus. I didn't want to deal with that today. "Nancy asked me to go with her and Barb, and then we had an argument, and I had to walk home last night since Barb didn't leave with me." I explained to my mother, rubbing my face.
"You walked home by yourself last night?! Y/n, there is a goddamn psycho in Hawkins, did you not hear about Joyce's boy, William, that's gone missing? Jesus Christ. You are lucky to be alive, young lady. I am this close to grounding you for a month." She said before leaving my room. "Now go to school."
I rolled my eyes as I pulled the covers off me and got up to get ready for school.
I breathed in the chilly morning air as I rode through the streets of Hawkins to school, and the events of last night played in my head again. Last night was so strange, I mean the whole fight with Nancy, and Barb leaving me to walk home by myself. Plus, the whole Steve thing. God, all of this was just so annoying.
I parked my bike in the same spot and went inside, where I found Nancy smooching face with Steve at her locker. Oh, fantastic. A great start to my day. I was pissed about last time. I mean, she did kick me out for telling the truth, and made me walk all the way home by myself.
"Y/n!" I heard Nancy say in front of me. I looked up to see her, but quickly ducked my head and then walked straight past her to my locker. What was I supposed to do, act like everything was totally normal?
At lunch, I looked around for somewhere to sit. Normally, I would sit with Nancy and Jonathan, but after everything that was going on, Jonathan wasn't at school and Nancy, with her new boyfriend, would sit with Tommy, and Carol. But I couldn't exactly do that today. Plus, where was Barb? Surely she'd be sitting with Nancy? Maybe she was giving Nancy the silent treatment, like I was.
"Y/n, come sit over here!" Nancy said as I walked past her table as she tried to get my attention.
Can she not get the clue that I didn't want to talk to her? I looked over at the 4 of them while walking past. Steve watched me as I did, and I returned the favour and stared back at him as well. He seriously had a staring problem. As I passed them, I sat down at a table by myself. Well, not entirely by myself. I was sitting by another junior named Eddie Munson, who was playing D&D with his friends at the cafeteria table. They weren't the popular type, hardly, so it was a nice change of surroundings.
The bell rang after lunch had ended, and that meant I had History class with Steve again, and I was definitely not looking forward to it, especially after last night.
"Okay, everyone, settle down, settle down." The teacher spoke to the class. I sat in the same spot, behind Robin Buckley, and as usual, Steve came in a few minutes later and sat down at the desk next to me.
