This time on Berk, hiccup, who had been seen as the disappointment of a chief Stoick the Vast's son, was doing amazing in dragon training. He was learning to kill dragons, and he made them practically fall at his feet incapacitated. At this very moment, he was at his last trial, competing against Astrid. She had been preparing for this all her life, and now she was being beaten by the boy who shouldn't have even been there in the first place. She wasn't going to let him win this time, she was going to get to kill that dragon tomorrow in the final exam.
"This time, this time for sure," Astrid muttered under her breath as she ducked and dodged behind barricades. Hiccup was over by the dragon, a mean gronkle, about to be attacked. Astrid came barging out from behind the barrier, and the dragon was lying incapacitated on the ground next to Hiccup. She let out a raging scream, slamming her axe on the ground, "No-No! You son of a half-troll, rat-eating munge bucket!!!"
Hiccup tried to inch away, out of the stadium as Astrid came for him. Stoick got up, putting a hand out, "wait, wait."
The crowd went quiet as he stopped everyone, while the elder of the tribe, gothi, came up.
Hiccup kept trying to leave, "So can I go-"
"Not so fast," gobber the belch, the head of the dragon training program, and blacksmith of the hooligan tribe stopped him.
"I'm kind of late for-"
"What!?" Astrid interrupted the small boy, "late for what, exactly!?"
"Ok quiet down," Stoick hushed Astrid and the rest who were still muttering in the crowd, "the elder has decided."
Gothi looked between the two teens, and gobber held his hook hand over Astrid's head. The old woman shook her head and most of the crowd gasped in excitement. Gobber hesitantly held his hand over hiccup's head, and Gothi nodded. The entire crowd went wild, and Astrid threw her axe across the arena floor.
"You've done it!" Gobber cheered just like everyone else, for hiccup, "you've done it hiccup! You get to kill the dragon!"
Stoick looked beyond proud of his son, "haha! That's my boy!"
Hiccup didn't look as happy as he should have been as a teen in the hooligan tribe. Killing a dragon was everything in the archipelago. Especially young, the younger you started the more dragons you got to kill. But hiccup didn't sound excited at all as he said, "Heh, oh yeah...yes! I can't wait...I am so..."
~
"Leaving!" Hiccup said, having a basket on his back with a small load of stuff of his on his back.
He was talking to a dragon, a night fury, who he had saved a few weeks ago. Now, this was against Viking law in every way shape or form. But hiccup wasn't sure if he wanted to be a Viking anymore, or if he could ever be one if he tried. He had attempted to kill the night fury when he first found where he had downed it in the woods. But he found that he just couldn't push himself to hurt it, now with the way it looked at him. And thanks to that, they became friends, even naming this dragon. He called it toothless, because of its unique quality of being able to retract its teeth.
"We're leaving, let's pack up," Hiccup continued, walking closer to his dragon, "looks like you and me are taking a little vacation. Forever."
Toothless came over to hiccup, sniffing him all over, before groaning.
"Sorry bud I ain't got any fish right now, we can catch some on the way out," Hiccup went and grabbed a few things he'd left on the ground when working with toothless in the cove. He put those items in the basket on his back, before mounting his dragon. He put his feet in place to be able to change the fake tail fin's position.
When hiccup had downed the night fury, he'd crippled it in the process. Of course, he regrets it completely, but without that, he would have never been able to ride him in the first place. Hiccup had continued to make a tail that would allow toothless to fly, but he wasn't sure how to make it open and close at the right time, without him having to do it himself. So he created a saddle and mechanism to allow himself to control the fake tail fin, to fly with toothless. They had gotten pretty good at working together now, and hiccup even trusted leaving the safety of the island.
Toothless looked up at his rider with a small trill, who then patted him on the head.
"It'll be fine, bud, come on, let's get going before someone comes to find me," hiccup urged, and they took off.
In fact, someone had come to look for them, it was Astrid. She'd made it just in time to see a black blur fly out of the cove, and out of sight beyond the tree line. She got spooked enough to run back, to find back up to bring with for her search for hiccup.
But they never found him.
