The Spoils Of War {Tbs}

Part 7

I watched from the windows as snow flooded the gardens I feared for those men off at war and the frostbite many soldiers likely had. I hadn't seen arthur in months and I feared for his safety but I had hope that this war would end soon. the kingdom became mostly women only ever men returning if they where badly hurt or the few legions of the army that staied here to protect the palace and it's grounds. I had not heard a word from arthur since he left and that did worry me but I'm sure he's busy. I heard a pleasant sound someone was returning from the battle but they didn't look happy the small group rushed to the palace with haste and came to me I new many of them all arthur's men closest to him lucas stood there panicked.
"My lady, pack what you cannot bare to leave and hurry" he told me
"Why? Lucas what's going on?"
".... It is lost my lady. The war is lost. Our men defeated. All others stayed to try and hold them. We came back for you my queen we have to get you to safety in the north" he said I nodded And gathered what little I could not bare to leave all the time asking lucas about what had happened he explained they where lead into a trap brought into the city for an ambush once inside they where trapped and few escaped with there lives they took my things loading up a carrige a small one with little royal look to it trying to look conspicuous and not be spotted
"We don't have much time. Hurry!" He called to the men climbing into the carriage with me "there on our tail they are attempting to claim the city and the throne"
"Should we not stay and defend it?"
"No! My lady that would be suicide there leader he's a mad man if he has no fight perhaps he will spare the innocent. We must get you to safety my queen" he explained thought the bumps and turns we took
"What... Happened to Arthur? Why isn't he the one here to save me?"
".... Arthur's dead" he said tears in his eyes
"What?" I asked a choak in my throat
"He's dead. There king slaughtered him... Held his head above the battle for all to see. He's dead y/n. We have to protect you know" he explained fighting back tears
"You loved him? Didn't you?"
"He was my king" he answered
"Lucas. did you love him?"
"Did you?"
"I did. In a way. More like a freind but I still loved him just not in the way you did"
"How did you know?"
"I'm not blind lucas. Two people in love is a easy thing to see." I smiled "that and he told me"
"I suppose we didn't keep I that much of a secret" he laughs "I feel so empty without him... But I know my purpose. My focus. To get you away and safe" he explained
"Thank you lucas"
Suddenly we stopped and there was silence
"Stay here. Don't come out unless I say" he says handing me a dagger I nodded he slowly left closing the door behind him there was silence an unearthly silence until "AAAHHH! Y/n! RUN!" He ordered I did as I was told hurrying out the other door running thought the ice and snow covered fields as fast as I could in my dress focusing on my breaths and on trying not to get lost but I felt something hit the back of my head making me scream and fall to the ground amungs the snow
