Towards the end of dinner, I felt much more comfortable in the presence of my brothers.

We had been chatting for about 40 minutes, laughing and joking about frivolous topics, just getting to know one another.

I figured out that both Romeo and Massimo are seniors, Massimo repeating his last year due to 'anger issues' whatever the fuck that means.

I discovered that I'd be joining their grade as a senior since I skipped 9th grade. This then turned into an argument about how Romeo and Massimo's friends had to be around me on a daily basis, apparently they were the biggest manwhores in the school.

Lovely.

After a few more jokes about how Massimo and I were in the same grade, the conversation steered away from the more light-hearted topics.

"Carlotta, we need to discuss some things before you get settled here." Angelo says, abruptly cutting off everyones laughter.

Everyone seemed to sober up fairly quickly, sitting up a bit straighter. It was as if they'd prepared for this.

Why did I feel like I knew what was coming-

"We aren't setting you rules-"

Oh, hold up.

"But you can't blame us for being protective of you after not having you around for so long." Angelo continued. "We all want to make up for lost time, so forgive us in advance if we treat you like the child we once knew, we missed out on a lot of your life already and we aren't ready to let you grow up just yet." He said, slight emotion in his otherwise hard voice.

Wow. That was not what I was expecting.

"However-"

There we go.

"-that doesn't mean we will tolerate girlfriends, boyfriends or hook-ups, drugs, alcohol and all that bad shit your brothers do."

Are men blind to the double standards and hypocritical words that spew from their pointless mouths?

All my brothers looked at me sternly, some nodding in agreement.

At least there was no 'respect your brothers', 'no going to the third floor' 'blah blah blah'.

"I appreciate you not setting me rules, but I am in control of my body and what I do with it and put in it." I reply.

Whether that's vodka or dick-

"I will be respectful of your choices and personal space as long as you are of mine." I say confidently, looking Angelo dead in the eye.

I could see Massimo smirk slightly from the corner of my eye, making me sit straighter in triumphant. Anglo's eyes gleamed a little at my comeback, before he nodded stiffly, obviously not happy with the contents of my response.
