Angel
I was getting bored staring at the road for hours. There wasn't much cars on the road. I wish I could call my moms and tell her I'm fine but Maurice and I ditched our phones miles back, afraid that they would track us down.
I glanced over and noticed that Maurice was so bored that he was reading a comic short off a newspaper they had in one of the gas stations that we stopped by at a few hours ago.
"These shits not even funny," Maurice said, plainly staring at the paper.
A snort escapes from me. "Then why are you reading it then?"
He folds the newspaper and sets it back down on his lap. "Because there is nothing to do. I'm bored as hell."
"Ain't you get some crossword puzzles?"
Maurice gives me a crazed expression. "Man, you don't remember me gettin' mad tryna find that one lil word?"
"Try again then," I shrugged.
"Fuck that."
"Be bored then."
"Why won't you just lemme take ova' driving again? I ain't got nun' else better to do."
"Ain't happening yet."
He dramatically goes to lean back into his seat, letting out a groan in frustration. "Nun' of this shit is fair. We can't run for the rest of our lives."
A scoff left from me. We went over this many times.
"Why? So we can go to prison for the rest of our lives or get sentenced to death? I've seen it happen too many times and I ain't even tryna see the same outcome with us. No way they would sit there and listen to what we gotta say."
"Ain't no freedom anyways. We can't even be in public anymo' or see or hea' from our family."
He had a point but this is way better than sitting in a jail cell, wishing that things had went more differently.
I'm convinced in life that there can never be a happy ending. My plan was to go to college, get my degree in business, and maybe get married and have a few kids.
Not once did I ever see myself become a running fugitive.
"I-I don't want to do this," Maurice said.
"Too late. We are already in some shit. In case you didn't know they got our exact identities going around. We go back and we're through. So toughen up."
"Fuck this."
Suddenly I feel him begin to grab the wheel, causing the whole car to swerve every which way on the road. Cars were honking as they dramatically swerved to get from around us.
"Yo, what the fuck?!"
I pried his hands from off the wheel.
Having enough of him going back and forth with me, I pulled the car ova' on the side of the road. I couldn't hide my pent up anger as I stared at him.
"What the fuck, Maurice?! You tryna get us killed?!"
"I don't even care at this point! We've been driving for two days straight and it's getting us nowhere!"
I didn't like how he was raising his voice at me. He should be the last person to raise his voice at me and he was the one who almost killed us by swerving us off the road.
"What's going on with you?"
He sinks into his seat and crossed his arms over his chest. "Nothing," he muttered.
