I stared at the blood on my hands. Maurice tears his eyes away from the body and gives me this frightened look. A look I have never seen in all my time of being his best friend.
There our dead friend, Jackson, laid with blood all on his white muscle shirt. We don't know who would kill him or even why. We looked even more guilty because blood was on both of our hands.
It wasn't our fault, we tried to save him.
More and more people left out of the house to come hear what happened outside. Everybody stared at us on the dirt path. The looks on their faces showed that they were just as scared as we were.
Here we are in the middle of nowhere in Texas around white, trashy, drunk people. Not to mention, our white friend who was just alive is now dead- in front of us.
"You murderers!" A blonde haired girl screamed, breaking the silence amongst everyone around the circle. "You killed him! Both of you killed him!"
I don't know how we're getting blamed and we don't even got no type of gun.
Quickly, everybody starts to agree. I never felt so scared and out of place before. There was no way that we could get out of this one.
"We didn't kill..." Maurice trailed off, hands shaking. His brown eyes were locked onto the group of the scared college kids. Each time, the circle around us has gotten bigger and bigger.
Why would we kill a guy we just met? We are just two best friends who is trying to make it through college together. I mean, Jackson was cool when we met him whenever we first arrived in Texas a few days ago. I just can't figure out who would hate him enough to kill him because he was genuinely a nice dude.
Somebody here shot him in the chest. They left before we could even see who it was.
I grabbed Maurice's arm to lift him up, getting blood on his arm in the process. We have to get away from here. It's like he couldn't move. He did not want to get up at all.
"W-we didn't kill him," I tried to plead. "We didn't."
I knew no matter how many times we said that we didn't do it, they wouldn't listen. The actual person who did it is now gone, carefree. Not even a week here and we are already in a whole lot of trouble. I didn't want to get arrested- neither did Maurice.
Turning on the TV, I would see the problems we had to endure on the daily from getting racially profiled, getting killed over something so small as a pick, and now getting accused of murder that we didn't commit. It's only then that we're living in a reality I tried to avoid at all costs. All the regretful things started to come to mind.
I looked down and saw Maurice's hands wouldn't stop shaking. The look on his face didn't go away, it was like he got more scared. I wanted to tell him we'll be alright, but I don't even believe that myself. So much was happening at once.
We're both scared as hell for what's going to happen next.
As if right on time, there were the sounds of police sirens heading in this direction. My heart erratically thumped against my chest. I almost forgot how to breathe. It's like the whole world was spinning around me as everyone had their eyes pierced on Maurice and I.
This wasn't going to end too well for us.
Coming here was a mistake.
