The next morning I woke up find Mom missing again. I found a note saying she had gone to work on the case and she would talk to me later. I knocked on Henry's door and walked in when I heard a grunt. He was playing one of his games again
"Hey, you seen mom?" I asked
"She slipped a note through the door" He said nodding over to a chest by the door where a piece of paper sat. I picked it up and found she had written basically the same thing without the talk later part.
"Hey, you have schoolwork to do" I said. The weekend was over and he had to keep doing work, otherwise he would get behind. Sometimes I felt like the mom in our family. While mom was out working, I made sure Henry did his homework, finished school projects, that kind of thing! While he was sitting doing work, I read the aggressive email I had received from my dance teacher asking how much longer I would be away because I had to rehearse. I ended up telling her I wasn't sure but it shouldn't be too long and if she could send a video or a link to a video of the choreography, then I could learn it as there was a dance space here in which I could rehearse! I doubt she will be please when she reads it, but it's the best I can do for now
"Hey" Mom said as she walked into the lounge where Henry and I sat
"We're you out all night? I didn't hear you come in" I said as she came and sat down opposite us
"We had dinner and then I had to work a little more. But I got you both breakfast because I am super mom" she replied "Some cocoa and a sesame bagel"
"That's a bagel?" Henry asked looking in the bag
"Aw I used to love them as a kid! Me and mom used to get a bagel every morning when we lived in Florida" I said pulling it out the bag and taking a bite "It was this or fruit roll ups" I said to Henry
"Sorry kid, we're not in Manhattan anymore" Mom replied. She took a swig of her cocoa and stood back up
"Are you going back out?" Henry asked
"I got to, yeah. You remember Leroy right? He's going fishing with some buddies today, wanna go?" She asked
"Yeah. I'll go, because I love fishing, not because I believe you" Henry said
"What?" Mom asked giving me a look. I shrugged my shoulders
"Not me" I mouthed to her behind him
"You know your not fooling me, right. Something's up" He said
"I'm working a case. You know how i get focused" She replied
"No, it's more than that. It's this town. All these old friends you've never mentioned and people whisper around us all the time. There's something your not telling us" Henry said
"It's a dirty business, being a bail bonds person. I don't want to soil your sweet head" Mom replied
"Your not getting off that easy. If you can't tell me the truth, then I wanna go home. Back to New York" Henry said. Suddenly Mom's phone rang
"Sorry" She said as she answered it "Hello? What? I'll be right there" She hung up the phone. We already knew what she was going to say "I gotta go"
"Mom, really, what's going on?" Henry asked
"You got me ok? Something is up and it just got even more complicated. So for now, you just gotta trust that I'm doing what's best, and I'll fill you in later?" Mom asked
"I trust you" Henry replied
"Thanks" She said. I waited for her to stand up and leave but she didn't, she was looking at me and I could feel her eyes on me "Can you trust that I'm doing what's best?" She asked me
