E I G H TWith the Moon Goddess
The sound of banging on my door jolted me awake. As I walked over to open my door, I slipped out of bed barefoot cussing. I knew I looked like a porcupine, but that didn't bother me. The person who awoke me was the one who would have to cope with the fallout from my unattractive appearance.
When I answered the door, there stood the little girl from the day before, dressed in a grey button-up dress and black booties, smiling. She waved up at me and said, "Morning Summer."
I was probably squinting at her by this point. My eyes hurt because her smile was as bright as the sun.
I strolled into the shared bathroom to clean my teeth and arrange my hair after inviting her into my cluttered room. When I returned to the room, I noticed she was sitting at my desk, staring at my unfinished assignment.
"That's something I haven't started yet. I have thirty days to do this task "As I sat down and pulled an outfit from my closet, I remarked. I decided to wear a denim jacket with black jeggings and sneakers. My black hair flowed down my back, and my denim jacket brought out the blue in my eyes.
She chirped, swaying back and forth on the balls of her feet, "So I spoke to my folks." She proceeded after I nodded. "I can go to school!" she exclaimed, her grin widening even more.
I wish her passion was contagious; maybe I'd be as enthusiastic about homework as she was yesterday. I strolled over to my desk and handed her one of the application forms I had stashed there. "Your parents must fill out this form, and then I will take it to the school," I said, and for a brief second, her grin shrank, although it was probably just my imagination.
She thanked me before rushing out of the room, the form clutched close to her chest. Before cleaning up my room and watching a movie, I laughed.
I left my bedroom door slightly ajar while watching the movie in case she decided to return.
When her little figure reappeared with the form near the end of the movie, there was no sign of a smile on her face.
I cocked an eyebrow as I looked over the application she handed me hesitantly. "This isn't filled in," I said, pointing to all the empty areas.
"I can't read," she said after swallowing.
"Yes, but this is for your parents to fill out, remember?" I nodded, understanding.
"However, my parents aren't here."
"Then you can hand it over to them when they return."
"I don't know when they're going to return."
"It's alright with me; I'll take it whenever it's finished."
She gave a slight nod before lowering her head. She seemed as if she was debating whether or not she should say something. "My parents are with the Moon Goddess," she said after a few moments of silence.
It was me hurting folks once more. "I'm sorry," I said as I reached for her hand.
"Don't apologize," she giggled before shaking her head.
"Wanna watch Ralph 2 with me?" I said, and she nodded, jumping up next me on the bed.
We agreed during the movie that we would figure out a way for her to get to school, but that until then, I would be responsible for teaching her to read and write. Her name was Jasmine, I discovered.
My parents summoned me downstairs in the early afternoon. Ms Emery's presence in the living room came as no surprise to me. Ms Emery was one of the psychologists who had the longest tenure of all of them. In my life, I've had a lot of individuals come and go, but she was the one who stayed the longest.
"I'm so glad to see you again, Summer," she whispered quietly as she stepped forward to hug me. I took a step back for every step she went forward. I'm not sure why, but I didn't want to be touched. She stopped moving and motioned for me to join her on the opposite couch, as if she had gotten the message.
The session proceeded in the same manner as the previous ones. She inquired about my day, how much my life has moved since our previous conversation, and my feelings over my suspension. I honestly haven't given my suspension much attention in the last two days. The first day was strange, but that was it. My life, on the other hand, does not appear to be progressing. I feel like I've arrived at a crossroads, and that'll be the case for the foreseeable future. But I'm sure Ms Emery wasn't here for that reason. These were mainly small talk questions to create the atmosphere around us comfortable before she asked the serious question about what happened the night before.
