O N ETrouble on the First Day
Maybe I shouldn't have gone so far. I knew I was in for it based on the tone of their voices from the principal's office.
"Don't worry, kid, they're not going to punish you too severely," James murmured hesitantly as he stood alongside me. I have no regrets about attacking the boy, but I do regret not thinking things through first. I'd entirely forgotten about James and his precarious predicament. My parents stipulated that if I wanted to attend a public school, I would have to have someone keep an eye on me at all times. In this case, it's James. I suppose that may sound a little excessive, but as long as I get to come here, I'm prepared to do it.
"Come on, they want you inside," James said as I followed him through the wood door, interrupting my thoughts. As I took in the cabin-like workspace, I swallowed. It's beautiful, but it's the kind of location you don't want to become accustomed to.
The principal's voice interrupted me from scanning the rest of the office. "Ms Cunningham, please take a seat," she said. I can't say I blame her; given my current situation, I'm sure I was glaring at all of her decorations.
I took the single available seat, right next to my dad, with trepidation. We both avoided eye contact, but I could feel mom's eyes searing into the side of my skull.
"I just had a quick conversation with your folks about what happened today. Is this your first day? ", she inquired, and I responded with a nod. "It's bad that on your first day, I have to expel you-"
"What?" I exclaimed as I stood up, the sound of wood as my chair slid away from me. Dad - there was a cold hand on my shoulder. I needed to de-stress. I'm not going to let my wolf out.
Deep breaths Summer. In.......Out. Repeat.
The principal, who was plainly just a regular person, saw this as an opportunity to carry on. "It would be unfortunate, as I stated. However, I made no mention of the fact that this was our plan."
"If your classmates and teacher hadn't interfered, CCTV footage suggests you could have done terrible harm to that boy. It's terrifying to see Ms. Cunningham in action," she said that she was staring at me, as if waiting for a reaction. While she continued, I kept a grimace on my face.
"If you get yourself into another predicament like this, I'll have to expel you, missy. It's conduct."
"You can't just expel me without some form of suspension first, Mrs...." I looked for her last name on her desk and she pointed to the name sign. Richardson. "Hello, Mrs. Richardson." "That's conduct as well," I added, mockingly.
She smiled at my retort before pointing to the papers on my mother's lap. Is there some form of agreement or contract in place? I questioned myself as I leaned forward, only to come to a halt as the first line was clearly apparent.
'We thus proclaim that Summer Cunningham has been suspended for 31 days from Kansas High School due to...'
For the first time since I walked into this room, my father and I exchanged glances. For the first time, I understood my parents' expressions. They weren't angry; rather, they were concerned.
