Summer stepped out of the car to a cacophony of student voices filling the void. It was the first day of the new school week. Summer struggled to keep her emotions in check among everyone else as the weekend sped by more faster than she had hoped.
Summer paused as Amy placed her hand on her arm. Summer returned the stare, her face forlorn, her mind and body numb with lethargy, and misery in her hazel eyes. Amy returned Summer's stare with a worried and concerned expression.
"Summer," she breathed.
Summer was uncomfortable, unable to accept anyone's sympathy or have images of her family reappear in her head. Summer walked to the front desk, turning aside, to get her new schedule.
Summer sat down in her classroom after tossing her bag on her table. Students sat with their heads bowed or engrossed in their phones all around her, completely oblivious to the outside world. A figure took the seat beside her as she brought out her notebook. When she turned around, she was taken aback to discover Zane staring at her.
"Can I help you?" she murmured irritably. Her mind went back to how his pack had just declared war on theirs.
With a smirk, he replied, "Nah."
She shrugged, refusing to let him approach her and concentrating on the teacher who had just entered the room.
The room fell silent, and class began. She was aware that his gaze was fixed on her, but she deliberately ignored it.
The bell rang an hour later, driving the students into a frenzy of bustle. Summer strapped on her satchel bag and walked out of the classroom with the others. In the corridor, footsteps and chatter could be heard. She leaned against a row of lockers, waiting Amy's arrival. Alexander exited from the room with a blond clinging to his side.
"So, if you ever need anything, give me a call," she said, a little, teasing smile on her face. "I'm an excellent teacher."
Summer snorted, attracting the girl's, Alexander's, and Zane's attention, who'd been following them from behind.
"I was utterly confused by the concept of trigonometric ratios. Is it possible for you to teach me? "Summer inquired. "Or do you only have the heart of a teacher for attractive men?"
"Cunningham, do us all a favor and jump off a building."
"You jump. I jump."
Summer disguised a sly smile as her cheeks flared crimson and she marched away in the opposite direction.
Amy, who had overheard the entire exchange, finally spoke out. "Thank you for rescuing my soon-to-be hubby from that obnoxious blond."
"You're a blond." Summer gave her a glum frown, which she returned with a warm smile. A strong outcry was followed by a loud laugh that broke through the heavy layer of voices. Summer came to a halt and took a look around. A semi-circle of males stood further down the corridor, facing a row of lockers. Summer moved over to them without saying anything to Amy. Amy and Alexander followed her with a single glance, pushing Zane to join them. As Summer approached the gathering, another protest erupted.
She pushed her way into the circle's center. A gangly, freckled-faced boy with thick glasses flinched against the lockers. Summer took a position with her back to him. The gang of guys took a step back promptly.
"Guys, good morning. Don't you think it's a little early for this drivel? "she enquired. Her gaze was drawn to the man in the centre.
"Summer, this is none of your business. Just go "he stated
Summer nodded with her brows lifted.
"True, but you have no right to mess in Elliott's business. So, because none of us are minding our own business, I've chosen to get engrossed in this business."
The guys exchanged puzzled stares, evidently caught off surprise.
"This is between us and Elliot, Summer. You should get out of there before you get injured "On the left, a man shouted up.
She took a look around the group, her gaze falling on each pair of eyes.
"Look, I don't have any personal sentiments towards Elliot here," she remarked, referring to the boy on the floor behind her. "I have even fewer feelings for all of you."
Her expression hardened as she finished speaking and her attention fell on the foursome's leader. He flinched, but remained still. All eyes were on him as tension flowed through the air. When he smirked, it snapped.
He remarked, mockingly, "You know what Summer?" "I'm getting out of here because I don't want to spoil your gorgeous face." He took a backward stride. "Sweetheart, I'll see you around."
As they walked away, the guys laughed. He spanked her butt as he past her. She had seized the guy's hand and yanked it backwards in the time it took Alexander to take a breath, Amy to move forward, and Zane to let out a deep growl. She kept her grip on him as he went to one knee. She locked her gaze on him, her eyes harsh and emotionless.
"Touch me again," she warned, her voice as cutting as a dagger, "And you'll see how quickly I can break five of your bones without breaking a sweat."
