Damage Control

On my first day in suspension, the sun peeping through the curtains in my room was what awakened me up. Last night, after spending the entire night contemplating ways to kill Mr Odd for getting me suspended, I may or may not have lost track of time.

Unfortunately, because I've been suspended, I'll have to stay at the pack house with the rest of the pack until the 31 days are up.

I wrapped my hair up into a sloppy bun on top of my head while slipping into some shorts and a jacket. I need breakfast, as much as I don't want to be around the pack.

"Good morning, Summer!" exclaimed a young girl, perhaps eight or nine years old, as she sat at the kitchen counter eating chocolate puff cereal. I waved and shrugged before taking a seat next to her and pouring some cereal for myself.

My aunt's voice filled the room as she emerged from the pantry, "Summer, is that you dear?" "Honey, are you sick?" she worriedly said as she ran over to place her hand on my brow.

"No, aunt Kim," I stated emphatically. Why was she behaving so strangely? So far, I haven't done anything wrong.

"Why aren't you at school then?" my cousin said as he sat on the sofa in the living room. That's what this is about. I'm guessing my parents didn't tell them about the incident at school. I suppose I should be grateful for it, considering aunt Kim would never stop telling me how much I should go 'be with my mate.' But I'm a little irritated that Mom couldn't assist me in any way because now I'm responsible for breaking the news to her and answering her many questions.

I informed them that I had been suspended for a month before devouring a large scoop of chocolate puffs. To be honest, I'm not a huge chocolate fan, yet no matter how hard I try, I can't stop myself from eating this chocolate cereal.

You may probably guess how they reacted: astonished but secretly delighted. They're surprised because they know how important school is to me, but secretly thrilled because it means they're one step closer to getting me into the pack business. Welcome to my family, i guess.

By the time I finished my cereal and washed my bowl, I left to find James (my fake teacher), who was standing in the center of the backyard, surrounded by a few children eagerly asking him questions. James was a crucial member of the pack, as well as one of the few members in the pack whom Father trusted.

As I got closer to him, I said, "Hey James." I hated interrupting him, but I had to get something off my chest. "Do you mind if we talk for a minute?"

"Summer, I'm sorry, but I'm in the middle of a Judo class. If you can fight, we can discuss." With a sneer on his face, he proposed. This man, if anyone knew how to get me to do something, it was him.

I removed my jacket and placed it on the grass near the fence before joining the rest of the kids as James paired them up to fight.

James, as usual, partnered me up with him so that we could converse. Mom had trained James, so I knew what he could and couldn't do because she had also trained me, and I had a few months of practice with dad. I'm confident that I can take James, who is around twenty years older than me.

James didn't waste any time, kicking my left leg. I avoided in time and responded before kicking him in the ribs with my right leg. Before my leg could reach him, he grabbed it and held it in such a way that I lost my balance.

"You're a little rusty around the edges, huh?" James said as he extended his hand for me to grab and stand up. I took his hand, sighing, and instantly regretted it when he let go, allowing me to tumble back to the ground. "And it appears that you now trust your opponent as well."

I shrugged and turned to face him, propped up on my elbows. "I just wanted to express my regret for what I did at school. That is all there is to it."

"Summer, it's amusing to hear you apologize. What's going on with you? ", he inquired as he sat down next to me on the grass. "You know I don't give a damn about it. If my mate had done what your mate did to you, I would have been furious."

"How come my parents haven't told the rest of the pack about that?" I inquired before telling him about aunt Kim and her son this morning.

"Summer, I'm not sure. I believe that if the pack finds out, it will put even greater pressure on you to mate, thus they may simply be protecting you."

I hope that's all there is to it.
