The Wooden Box

"What should we do about Phinn?" Summer's father asked as he moved over to his seat at the table. She was once again sitting in the dining room having dinner with her parents, Tyler and Jasmine.

"I think we have more pressing matters to deal with dad," Tyler mumbled, spooning his food. "Like maybe the Luna Moon pack declaring war because of Summer's doing."

Summer's mother sent a warning glare in Tyler's direction. Discussing pack matters at the table was something they never did but the fact that Tyler brought it up, made her realize that he was still not over their previous argument.

Sighing, she leaned back against her chair, drawing their attention. "Why do you think they're declaring war Tyler?", Summer asked as she folded her arms in front of her chest. Yes, they didn't discuss pack matters at the table because of Summer choosing to steer clear of that life, but now that she brought it up - guess they will discuss it after all.

Tyler looked taken aback that she was directly addressing him after not talking for three whole days. Both siblings were mad at each other; Tyler for Summer's slip of the tongue and Summer for Tyler supporting the elders while they slandered her name. She gave him the option of apologizing to her and vowed to return the apology too, if he did. However, he never did, and that just sent Summer into a deeper rage knowing that she was not the one at fault in the first place.

Tyler looked over hesitantly to his parents before looking back at Summer. "It's obviously because of you rejecting Zane and thus forcing us to break the agreement," he stated while his mother nodded in agreement.

That only irritated her more.

"Is that what you believe brother?", Summer asked, her tone mocking. "Alphas are expected to think deeper than that. You're merely just using that as an excuse because that is all you can decipher when you look at the situation." Her tone became serious and Tyler shifted in his seat so that he was now leaning forward, elbows propped on the table, letting out a dry chuckle.

He was laughing like that a lot now. Almost as if nothing was ever really funny to him and he was just laughing for the sake of laughing.

"And how would you know Summer?", he inventively asked, raising his eyebrows. "You're obviously had three years of practice in being an Alpha so please, enlighten me."

"Correction - I don't have any experience and I am not an Alpha, neither are you. Although I am aware of the fact that in order for one pack to declare war through the were-council, they will need to alert the council three weeks prior to the time. I rejected Zane two weeks ago and you made the arrangement the day after. This means that the war was planned a week before all that, and it is the elders who are at fault for failing to notify you earlier," Summer stated sternly. "So enlighten me dear brother, have you forgotten that we were originally competing packs? Or did mother fail to tell you that?"

She gave them no opportunity to respond before she excused herself and returned to her room.

A low lamp flooded her room with a warm yellow light. Textbooks and notebooks were strewn about Summer, some belonging to her and some belonging to Jasmine. She sat with her feet tucked up on her bed, a laptop on her lap. Her room lay quiet around her until footsteps resounded in the hallway outside her door. Summer scrambled for a pencil as the handle turned. She sent the pencil flying as soon as the door swung open.
